| Scott Mullin would lead the 10 car field to the green
with a pole speed of 53.033 good for 180.567 mph. The #28 Havoline machine would lead the
first lap with Norbey Soontiens taking over the second spot in the #9
Coors Thunderbird. Soontiens would waste little time moving Mullin to
the rear of the pack as he started the freight train pass on lap 2 down
the back stretch. |
 |
| Soontiens would have to move to the outside entering
the tri-oval as Dan Searle would get his Budweiser Chevy underneath his
Coors counterpart. The #9 car would start the backward trek on the
outside while Harry "Richard Petty" Maclean would take over
the inside line heading into turn 3 stealing the point from Searle in
the #11 car. John Agnew in the #17 Tide ride would lose the draft and
would be watching the pack fade away into the distance. |
 |
| Maclean would pilot his STP Pontiac past the line with
both the Miller High Life cars in tow. Dave Blaxland in #8 car
running second while newcomer Tony Urquhart in the #12 Buick followed in
the third spot. Then on lap 5 the #12 would warp causing a multicar
crash collecting Soontiens, Searle and Vince MacDonald in the #7 Zerex. |
 |
| The green flag would wave on lap 9 with Maclean still
leading. Scott Scrimgeour in the #33 Skoal Bandit chevy would get help
from Carman Schwartz in the #75 Valvoline Pontiac down the back stretch
to blow by Maclean on the inside. As the pack worked its way through
turn 3 Dan Searle would get too close to Vince MacDonald setting up a
scary crash as MacDonald tumbled high in the air after tangling with the
catch fence. Although both drivers were ok their rides for the night
were done. Norbey Soontiens would once again be on the wrong side of
lady luck with nowhere to go being collected for the second time. |
 |
| Scrimgeour would restart the field on lap 15 with
Schwartz in tow. Maclean would start in third and by the end of lap 16
would now be on the point with the help of the #12 car. For the next
three laps Maclean would have a mirror full of Miller High Life as
Blaxland and Urquhart continued to swap the second spot. |
 |
| By lap 21 Schwartz would blow by the Miller cars with
the assistance of Scrimgeour in the Skoal machine. Down the back stretch
Scrimgeour and Mullin would help the Valvoline of Schwartz work by
Maclean on the inside. Just 8 laps to go as the field crosses the
stripe. |
 |
| As the cars head into turn 1 Mullin gets a run on
Schwartz and takes over the point heading down the back stretch.
Scrimgeour pushes Schwartz back by on the inside as they cross the line
to complete lap 23. Heading down the back stretch Scrimgeour heads to
the inside with Blaxland helping out shuffling Schwartz to third. |
 |
| Maclean with a head of steam on comes into turn 1 fast
and touches Schwartz bringing out the caution for the third and final
time. The STP Pontiac is done for the night. It will now be a dash to
the checkers with an anticipated green white checker finish. |
 |
| Its a wild restart with one to go! Mullin ducks to the
outside of second place runner Dave Blaxland. As the cars snake down the
back stretch Mullin moves to the inside with the help of fellow
Alabama-gang member Tony Urquhart in the #12 car. As the field comes
through turn 3 it is Scrimgeour in the lead followed by Mullin, Urquhart
and Blaxland. Coming off turn 4 Mullin pulls to the high side and
Urquhart follows to push the Havoline car by on the outside at the line
by a mere 4 feet to seal the deal. |
