Chapter 8

"Well kids it's been fun but I gotta go see Jamie" Pam said standing up. She quickly walked outta the room. "Baby?" Shane asked, I took a deep breath knowing what he was about to ask. "Yeah?" I asked him. Shane could tell I was getting nervous. Crap anyone with 2 braincells could tell I was getting nervous. "What was up with you last night. I mean first you wake up screaming, and then I swore I heard you crying in your sleep" Shane looked concerned. I took a deep breath and looked at him "Shane, I wanna tell you... but I just can't right now. Im not ready" I said, tears welling up in my eyes. Shane looked at me sympathetically, he wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight. "Whenever you are ready to tell me, I mean whenever, i'll listen". I nuzzled close to Shane as we sat there for awhile in silence.
**1 month later***
The relationship between Shane and I had grown tremendously. We saw each other as much as time would allow. Shane was getting ready for Daytona, him and the #15 truck team were psyched about the upcoming season. As for me, buisness at the shop had picked up alot. So much so that I was in the process of hiring another mechanic to help carry some of the load. I had never worked on a Saturday, Billy had always run the shop then. And since we were closed on Sunday I spent most of the weekends with Shane. He liked how my schedule worked because come race season, I would go to watch him race whenever I could.

I heard Billy calling my name from the front of the shop. I put down my wrench and walked up to see what he needed. "Phone" he said seeing me coming out from the back room. "Hello?" I said into the reciever. "Hey sexy" the cute southern drawl on the other end of the line said. I smiled "whatcha up to babe?" I asked hearing all the racket behind him. "Im finishing up this appearance" he stated "Jr is having a party tonight, sort of a pre-speedweeks thing. Wanna go?". I thought about the engine that I HAD to get done by Monday..... "yeah I will.. as long as you don't mind sitting up at the shop with me Sunday so I can finish up this engine." Shane agreed and told me he would be at my place at 8. I hung up and went back to work.
*******
I had just finished drying my hair and putting on my make-up. I went through my closet trying to find something cute and warm to wear. I decided on a maroon sweater with a pair of blue jeans. I was trying to pull the sweater off a hanger when a box from the shelf fell and hit me on the foot. I saw the papers and photos scattered at my feet. I slowly leaned down to pick them up, my hands were shaking as I reached for a photo. I picked it up and knelt down on the floor. The picture was old, Bobby's first win, I thought to myself. I closed my eyes trying to get the courage to look at more. I felt the tears stinging my eyes. I opened them and stared at the picture again. I continued going through the box, sobbing as I looked at each article and picture. I picked up an article from the local paper, the headline sent chills down my body,  "Racing Hearts". The picture underneath was Bobby and me, smiling happily in front of my race car. I heard the front door open "Baby??" Shane yelled... I quickly put the contents back into the box and closed it before he came into the room. I put the box back on top of the closet and tried my best to wipe off the mascara that had accumulated underneath my eyes. The door swung open "hey.... you're not ready yet?" he asked playfully. I guess wiping the mascara from under my eyes couldn't hide that I was upset, because as soon as Shane saw me he knew something was wrong. "Shan, honey, what's wrong?" he asked walking towards me. "Nothing I just hit my foot on the bedpost" I lied. I never felt worse about lying to him, but I still couldn't tell him. "Im sorry, want me to kiss it and make it better?". I smiled, grabbed my clothes and started changing. I re-applied my make-up and was ready to go. Shane grabbed my coat for me from out of the closet by the door. The ride to Jr's was quiet. All I could do was stare out the window at the freshly fallen snow. Shane knew something was wrong, he just didn't know what. But he was going to find out.
