On the southern side of the Grand Harbour are the three cities, one of which is Birgu. This was the site of the various auberges of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem - the Knights of Malta - who held off the Ottoman Turk invasion in the Great Siege of 1565.
The steps shown in this oil painting are typical of the architecture of the old city of Birgu. |
