Now hydrogen bombs are about 100 to 1000 more time powerful than atomic bombs.  The power they wield is unimaginable.  Can you imagine a Hiroshima times 1000?  A bomb of that caliber would surly destroy an inconceivable amount of lives and matter.  Now the hydrogen bomb uses nuclear FUSION, not fission.  Yes there is a difference.  The bomb is basically like an atomic bomb, just much bigger.  Instead of using TNT to compress radioactive material, it uses ATOMIC BOMBS.

To top it all off, the fusion bomb, the bomb in the middle, is in a uranium casing, ie. The same stuff inside the atom bombs.  So, it�s really a bunch of atomic bombs surrounding a bomb more powerful than the atomic bombs with a casing of uranium.  Cool huh?  Now to create this atomic bomb time�s 1000 effect, they used a different center material.

The middle is made up of trillions of atoms of deuterium and tritium, both isotopes of hydrogen.  They contain one or two more neutrons in their nuclei.  Both are gases and hard to store.  Tritium is hard to get and has a short half life, meaning the bomb would have to be constantly replenished.  To store the deuterium it is combined with lithium to make lithiumdeuterate.  They found that when lithium was in a fission reaction it produced tritium (lithium-6 plus a neutron yields tritium and helium-4; lithium-7 plus a neutron yields tritium, helium-4 and a neutron).  This eliminated the need of having tritium, it could be made in the reaction.
