| Experience/Artifact Reflection for
Wisconsin Standard for Teacher Development and Licensure #10 Title of Experience/Artifact: Sunday School Teacher Date Experience Completed: 2005-2006 School Year Describe your educational experience/artifact: One way I connected with the community and other teachers was during my experience as a Sunday school teacher. I taught Sunday school in cooperation with other teachers. I regularly attended church at the Platteville Community Evangelical Free Church and when I heard they needed more volunteers to help with Sunday school, I thought to myself this would be a great way to give back to the community by using my skills as a teacher to assist in the teaching of God's word to the children of the community. Some of my duties as a Sunday school teacher were to recognize the importance of this ministry and take the necessary time to prepare lessons. Other duties were to care for students individually through prayer, telephone calls, birthday cards, etc. I also attend trainings specific to this church ministry. I felt this was a great opportunity to connect with the Platteville community. ALIGNMENT: Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment This experience addresses the Wisconsin Standard for Teacher Development #10: Teachers are connected with other teachers and the community. I feel that this experience addresses standard ten because I had to foster a relationship with other teachers. Cooperating with other teachers to lead Sunday school lessons and activities maximized the students overall learning experience. It provided them with instruction based on the ideas and prospective of more than one teacher. Also, I foster relationships with parents before and after church. I introduce myself to parents, tell them about my experiences with their children, and listen to their comments. I believe that creating such relationships supports student learning and their well-being. When the students saw I was interested in their lives by interacting with their parents showed them that I truly cared about them. I believe if students realize that I care, my connection with them will strengthen. Consequently, I think they will feel safe and comfortable in my presence, which will positively affect their ability to learn from me. Teaching Sunday school also shows how I fostered a relationship with the community because I talked and interacted with all different people from the community through the course of teaching Sunday school and attending church. Furthermore, I realized the importance of taking an active role in the community. I understand the importance of being a good role model for my students by taking part in these types of volunteer activities. Also aligns with Wisconsin Standard for Teacher Development and Licensure WSTDL #7 Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, & Disposition Statement Alignment This experience addresses the KSD4.f. Shows Professionalism. This experience aligns with this standard because it shows my ability to participate professionally in the staff decision-making process. I did this by planning lessons and co-teaching with another teacher. I learned to assure that all students, especially those untraditionally underserved, learn in my classroom. Also aligns with Knowledge, Skill, & Disposition Standards KSD4.c. Communicates with Families REFLECTION My experience as a Sunday school teacher has taught me that communicating with parents, students, and other teachers is the key to becoming a successful teacher. On a weekly basis I had to talk to the director of childrens ministries, teachers, students, and community members about what was going on in my classroom. This has taught me how to involve everyone in the learning process. Also, this experience allowed me to foster a relationship with many different people in order to support the students in my class. As a future educator I learned that I can make a difference in the lives of my students. I can do this by helping students feel better about themselves or by helping the community as a whole. I also learned the proper way to build relationships with many different people who are involved in the learning process and I can take this skill and apply it to my future career as a school teacher. |
