My Developmentally Appropriate Practice
Statement
There are many approaches to education that I can utilize as a educator.  The one approach that specifically appeals to me focuses on the child as a developing human being and life-long learner.  This approach is referred to as developmentally appropriate practices (DAP).  The DAP approach ensures that each child is an active participant in the learning process, while at the same time ensuring that the teacher takes an active role in the teaching process.  By utilizing developmentally appropriate practices in my classroom, I will be an active facilitator who guides children in creating meaning in the various activities and interactions encountered throughout the day.

In utilizing developmentally appropriate practices will require me to make decisions in the classroom by combining my knowledge of child development and my understanding of the individual child.  In doing so, a meaningful outcome for the child is achieved.  Whether focusing on an individual child or on the class as a whole, there are three areas for consideration: 1) developmentally appropriate practices are age appropriate, 2) individually appropriate, and 3) culturally and socially appropriate.

It is important to me that I practice developmentally appropriate strategies.  To ensure that these practices occur in my classroom I will follow these guidelines:

1. Create a caring community of learners.

2. Teach in a way to enhance development and learning.

3. Construct appropriate curriculum.

4. Assess children's learning and development by using documentation.

5. Establish reciprocal relationships with families by developing a good rapport.
