The End For A New Beginning

I can hardly believe that another year has gone by. NAPM-SA has done a lot this past year as our century draws to a close. In review over the past year (September 1998- June 1999) we had diverse programs like:

9-98 Marshall Wordon from the University of Arizona talking about Arizona's economy and growth.

10-98 Tour of the Biosphere in Oracle and Dr. Tony Burgess telling us about the area's geological history.

11-98 An open forum roundtable discussion on any subject from our NAPM-SA membership.

12-98 A night of laughs, humor and cartoons from the Arizona Daily Star newspaper D.W. "Fitz" Fitzsimmons.

1-99 Ronald Friedman talking about Supply Chain Management being our demon or career opportunity.

2-99 Tim Jobe from Gaylord Container educating us on packaging basics for the buyer.

3-99 Michael Campisi from Allied Signal discussing how we can manage our professional relationships.

4-99 Bill Follette talking about all aspects of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.

5-99 Steve Jewett from Governor Hull's Southern Arizona office talking about legislative issues on business.

We also had pre-dinner workshops covering many subjects and nationwide satellite seminars like:

9-98 Electronic Commerce

11-98 Project Management for Supply Management Professionals

2-99 Roadmap to Effective Supplier Relationships

4-99 Strategy Cost Management: Understanding Cost Price Analysis Tools

6-99 Legal Perspectives Protecting Your Organization by Understanding Rights, Responsibilities, Obligations

NAPM-SA is not just an organization for purchasing professionals. Its heart and soul are its members, officer's board of directors, and mainly it's volunteers. NAPM-SA would not be where it is today without you the member and volunteers. It has been an honor serving you as your President, Educational Resources/Programs Chair and on

Board of Directors. But the real thanks for running NAPM-SA go to:

Mare Allen: President Elect, House Chair, Board of Directors
Tom Smith: Vice President, Membership and Special Events Chair
Ralph Long: Director of National Affairs
Peter Petersen: Secretary, Communications Assistant, Board of Directors
Peter Burgard: Treasurer, Board of Directors
Terry Spence: Communications Chair, Board of Directors
Elliott Chaitt: Global Resources Chair
Pancho Hernandez: Communications Assistant, Special Events, Board of Directors
Anita DeMarco: Affiliated Marketing Chair, Communications Assistant

As we step into the next millennia, Mare Allen will become our next NAPM-SA President for 1999-2000 guiding our volunteers in building an NAPM-SA you would be proud to be part of. Lets show Mare Allen our support by getting more involved within NAPM-SA by volunteering in any capacity and telling a fellow purchasing friend about NAPM-SA and bring them to our next meeting in September when we tour the Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona

1999 NAPM-SA GOLF
TOURNAMENT

By Pancho Hernandez

On May 14, 1999, our annual NAPM-SA Golf Tournament was held again at Starr Pass Golf Course. It was a great success. We had a great turn out with 132 golfers participating in this years' event. We had at total of 149 for dinner. Dinner was held right after the golf tournament at poolside, with Starr Pass doing an excellent job in catering the food. Awards and door prizes were announced and given out at the dinner.

For those NAPM-SA members that played golf, I hope you enjoyed yourself and had a great time. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

I would like to give a special "THANK YOU" to our suppliers for contributing door prizes, gift certificates, money, sponsoring tee advertisements along with participating in this years' golf tournament. NAPM-SA could not have done it without your support and contributions. I also would like to give special thanks to the following members and volunteers who contributed their time and efforts in making this year' golf tournament fun, exciting and successful. June Ogrodowski (Mining & Construction Suppliers-Industrial Distribution Group), Marlene Ring (Clifton Steel), Mare Allen (Industrial Motor & Control), Kathy "KAT" Hampton (Clifton Steel), Madeline Flores (Wieserlock), Pete Petersen (Cyprus Sierrita), Scott Oldendorph (A.S.D.B.), Tom Smith (T.A. Caid) and of course myself Pancho Hernandez (Mining & Construction Suppliers-Industrial Distribution Group). Again "THANK YOU."

Keep in mind that next years' "NAPM-SA GOLF TOURNAMENT" will be held again at Starr Pass on May 5, 2000. Don't forget to mark your calendar or make a note of it.

We will continue to bring you speakers and offer Professional Development sessions that will be interesting and informative. We want to provide you with information that will be useful in your job as a Purchasing or Supply Chain Management Professional.

On September 30, 1999 we will be presenting the first Satellite Seminar of the new year entitled "Supply chain Management-The Added Value to the Bottom Line". Other topics that will be presented are:

  • Selecting and Implementing Web-based Procurement Software.
  • Financial Analysis of Suppliers
  • Negotiating Techniques
  • Cost Reduction Strategies

  • So mark your Calendars.

We are really looking forward to making this next year the best year yet. It's you the members that make the our organization what it is. If you have any ideas or suggestions or want to get involved contact one of the Board members.

    Summer Workshop

Each summer members of the Board of Directors and Committee Chairs attend a summer workshop to learn new ideas and ways to improve our affiliate. This year it is being held at the Oakland Civic Center on July 16th and 17th

This year it will be joint workshop with members from District 1, 2, and 3. This will bring together more than 300 members to network and share ideas compared to the regular 80 to 100. There are workshops on subjects like Public Relations, Membership, Treasury, and Making the Newsletter. These workshops are full of information and we will be bringing back ideas to make our affiliate even better.

    1. Antitrust issues
    2. The Law of Agency
    3. Minimizing the Organization's Liability

HOW TO GET YOUR SHIPMENTS THROUGH U.S. CUSTOMS AND KEEP YOUR SANITY

By Elliott Chaitt, Global Resources Chairman

If it hasn't happened to you already, don't worry because it will some day. "What are you talking about," you may ask. What would you do if your boss singles you out to see that a shipment of material purchased abroad is cleared through U.S. Customs without delay. You could look for another job or, you might try the following. Get yourself a Customs Broker!

Nearly all shipments of goods imported into the United States are handled by customs brokers (in fact about 97 percent). Importers are not required to use a customs broker but it makes good sense to do so. Clearing goods through Customs can be an administrative nightmare of forms, regulations and red tape. Customs brokers really earn their commissions. They possess a unique combination of legal, accounting and logistical skills. Some of the skills they can provide the importer Include:

  • Preparing and filing import and export documentation
  • Reviewing classification, duty rates and assigned value of imports
  • Pursuing appropriate administrative remedies with U.S. Customs where required
  • Depositing duty payments with Customs on behalf of the importer
  • Arranging for drawback of duties on exports
  • Securing the release of goods from Customs and other federal agencies
  • Arranging for delivery of goods to importers warehouse or plant

  • Customs brokers also provide advisory services respecting tariff laws and regulations And consult on transportation matters such as terms of sale, port selection and freight routing. Customs brokers are licensed by the U. S. Treasury under the supervision of the U.S. Customs Service. There relationship with the importer is totally confidential and while hey are bound to act in a manner that protects the importer's interests, they also have an obligation to the U.S. Customs Service similar to an attorney's obligations as an officer of the court. So, do not ask a customs broker to violate or even "bend" customs laws or regulations.

When selecting a customs broker, check his or her ability to handle shipments from or to the country with which you plan to conduct business. Some brokers have expertise in dealing with certain countries but none with other countries. And many countries, especially "third world" nations are uniquely different in the way they handle such transactions. If you expect to engage in a continuing import business establish a close relationship with the broker of your selection based on trust and a complete exchange of information.

    Excellence in Purchasing Award
The "Excellence in Purchasing Award was given to two organizations for their efforts to raise the standards of their Purchasing functions. This year the NAPM-SA would like to recognize :

    The Cyprus Sierrita Corporation
    And
    Mining and Construction Suppliers

    Board of Directors

The board of directors are the individuals that volunteer their time to make this organization work for you. They are responsible for interfacing with the National Organization, arranging the dinner meeting, securing speakers, organizing the golf tournament, bringing you the satellite seminars, and producing the newsletter

We would like to welcome the new members to the board:
    Julie Cooper....................................1 Year Term
    Rosenda Medina...............................3 Year Term
    Mack Skeen....................................3 Year Term
    Marty Spiros...................................2 Year Term
Returning for another 3 year term is Peter Petersen

Rounding out the Board are :
Mare Allen, also our new President
    Peter Burgard
    Pancho Hernandez
    Scott Oldendorph
