The first collecting spot of the trip! A sleepless 'red eye' overnight flight from Miami followed by an overnight drive from Montevideo that included a 2 AM detour to a mechanic to fix a broken fuel line left me strangely awake and excited. The first body of water. The first cichlid. The first PIKE CICHLID! After it I go, camera in hand, like a mad man. The instant my feet get wet, I slip. SPLASH! PLOP! My expensive Nikon digital SLR takes a bath. Now I use it as a paper weight. On the bright side, I joked, the sensors are now cleaned of the annoying dust specks, a curse of many a digital SLR. 'Nikon bitches', as Spencer likes to call Jeff and I, since Spencer uses an Olympus that comes with a fancy vibrating sensor that automatically removes the dust specks from sensors. Must be nice. To have a camera, that is.
