Uruguay 2006
The People...

Felipe Cantera
Felipe 'Uruguay Jones' Cantera, a good friend and our guide in Uruguay. He knows the country like the back of his hand and is the ultimate expert on the cichlids of Uruguay. He also exports fishes from Uruguay to North America and Europe.
Visit his website at AqvaTerra.
Late October thru March is a good time to visit Felipe to collect cichlids and May thru June is ideal for killifish.

Jeff Cardwell
Jeff Cardwell, my accomplice, confidant and mentor.

Spencer Jack
Spencer Jack fell in love with everything Uruguay and plans on going back numerous times. He could not contain his new-found passion for the country, the cichlids, the food and of course, the babes! He's in the process of organizing a few trips in 2007 and '08. You may email him at spenjack at gmail dot com. And get in line!

Alejandro Rocca
Alejandro 'CARANCHO!!' Rocca was our tireless companion, a skilled mechanic at 3 AM when our truck died, comic relief, fish seiner and all-round ladies man. And I really struggled to keep up with his 90-mph Canelones dialect of Spanish.

Jesus
Jesus was an incredibly friendly and hospitable host at his open and wind-swept estancia (ranch) near the Brazil border. He was so thrilled to have us drop by. A true gentleman!

Spencer Jack and Vin Kutty
Fresh off the Miami ride, Spencer Jack and yours truly at the Montevideo airport.

Corina and Felipe Cantera
Felipe and his daughter Corina, 3.

Corina Cantera
Quite possibly the cutest kid I've ever seen! Corina is the only 3-year-old to have gone cichlid collecting with Dr. Sven Kullander. She apparently insists on addressing the famed ichthyologist by his last name.
