Crenicichla ternetzi Norman, 1926 Group: Lugubris Distribution: Oyapoque river system at the border of Brazil and French Guyana. This specimen caught in a tributary of the Mana. Type Locality: Oyapoque River at Saut Cafesoca, French Guiana Size: 12-14 inches Comments: A rarely imported species that belongs to the slender and pointy-faced subgroup of the Lugubris group. While not closely related to C. johanna, this fish appears like a slender version of C. johanna and is often found along side it. In reality, it is closely related to C. multispinosa, a species found a little further west in French Guyana and Surinam. C. multispinosa have numerous small white spots on the posterior third of the body and a distinct humeral spot, while C. ternetzi have a wide lateral band with no caudal spot. The suborbital blotch is less prominent in C. ternetzi. It was collected in a clear water stream with pH between 6 and 7.
