Bigi Poika and Coesewijne River, Suriname

More nature along the way...

This is the same flower and picture as above, but the center held a secret!

There are many blackwater streams and pools in Suriname that flow into the major clearwater rivers. On the way to Bigi Poika, we saw this wonderful little habitat, a blackwater creek flowing into the jungle. There was a pair of Krobia guianensis spawning amongst the Nymphaea.

A group of unidentified redlined tetras

Jeff and yours truly seining - we caught a lot of tetras and a few cichlids.

The classic leaf fish - Polycentrus schomburgki

One of the more common fishes in the creek

An emerald/yellow Astyanax (?) sp.

Once at the Coesewijne River (that's 'Koosavan' for you North Americans), we found the going a bit tough. Suriname generally did not have a lot of muddy, stagnant or polluted habitats. This was one of them.
A cut on one of my toes got infected after playing in this mess and I limped for a few days after.

I itched for a few weeks after this.
I'm sure some microscopic creature tried to enter me through my nether-regions. We were both trespassing.

If you too want to feel itchy, the GPS coordinates are: 5 North 23.540; 55 West 36.982. This part of the river has an unusual visitor - the West Indian Manatee. There is a Manatee sanctuary nearby.
