Crenicichla menezesi Ploeg, 1991 Group: Saxatilis Distribution: North East Brazil ("Shoulder of Brazil".) Type Locality: Caieira, Maranhao, Brazil Size: 6-8 inches Comments: Rarely imported. It peaceful for a Saxatilis group fish. Juveniles school much like those of Lugubris group. There are two parallel rows of spangles about 4 or 5 scales apart along the flank of the fish, a characteristic of immature specimens. The females lose some of the spangling as they mature and the males add some extra spangling. Easily cared for and induced to spawn. My group of ten were juveniles from adults imported from the state of Pernambuco. Of the ten, only one was a female. The fry from the spawn in my tank also yielded a similar ratio of male to females, possibly indicating an environmentally determined sex. Described in: Ploeg, A.
