Crenicichla lucius male

Crenicichla lucius male

Crenicichla lucius Cope, 1871

Group: Saxatilis

Distribution: Rio Napo (Ecuador and Peru) and Rio Nanay, lower Morona, Ampiyacu, Mazan and Ucayali.

Type Locality: Upper Río Maranon, Peru

Size: 7-9 inches

Comments: An occasionally imported species. It is not particularly aggressive for a Saxatilis group fish. Breeding will be successful once pair bond has been established. A subdominant male was able survive for a year with my mating pair by wearing female coloration. Unpaired subdominant males with typical male coloration were promptly killed at the onset of broodcare. I do not think it was a case of "sneaker male syndrome" as seen in Apistogramma species but the subject warrants further investigation. Also exported from the general area is C. anthurus but it has a distincly ocellated humeral spot while C. lucius has an unocellated humeral spot.

Described in: Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society 11; p 570
