Type Locality: Itupiranga, Brazil
SIZE: 8-10 inches
Comments: This dorsally compressed fish is adapted to living among rocks in fast-flowing water. A significant portion of its habitat was lost due to flooding caused by the construction of a large reservoir. Unusual amoung Crenicichla in having such a pronounced suborbital stripe and an atrophied swim bladder. As a result, it spends most of its time on the aquarium floor. It is imported occasionally for the aquarium trade and are sold at steep prices. This is a voracious predator capable of swallowing very large prey.
