Well and why thy should be togther? Is my belief and of several other people that they made the perfect couple. Although hundred of fans may differ I say they just look too cute to be only enemies. Yes they were enemies, and he killed her, but he was being control by Jenova.

Aeris was a small frail woman, she selled flowers in the slums and was poor. The last ancient who was persecuted by ShinRa. She too was alone.
I'm very sure that if they had meet before Aeris would have tried to help Sephiroth find his way out of evil. She would have summon Holy, not only to help the planet but to help Sephiroth as well. Aeris was the perfect person to teach Sephiroth about feelings and emotions and if she had being persistent he would have open to her, learning to love her because of her closeness and warm heart.
For me they are the perfect couple!
