JRR Tolkien wrote and created the world we see in this cards. The Cards have images drawn by different authors from the books:
The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

The beggining of the rules has and intruduction that goes like this: "During the Third Age, the Valar sent five Maiar to Middle-earth to unit and counsel the Free Peoples in their struggles agains Sauron, the Dark Lord. However, they were fobidden to dominate the peoples of Middle-Earth or to match the power of Sauron with power. These five were known as "Wizards" (also called Istari) in Middle Earth, and individually they were called: Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando."

Basically you play as one of these wizards and try and defeat Sauron.
