The OUTSIDE'S in great shape!
Meet "Lucky Seven"! An '82 Westfalia! The Geigers' Seventh Volkswagen Camper
. . . the bumper ends, and rubber bumper strip.
Lucky, waiting its turn at the German Motor Shop
WHO put this covering on the inside? It's obviously an "After Market" product! It had a foam backing that has totally disintegrated into a fine dust. ALL of it has to come down!
The dry, Arizona heat may have kept ol' Lucky's body from getting all rusted out, but it surely played havoc with the formica paneling and linings on the inside! Fortunately, the curtains and upholstery are still in pretty good shape. Even the rugs look good, but are VERY dirty . . . replacement will be necessary!
Curtains in an '82 VW camper are a PAIN to take down! These, we're sure, had NEVER been washed!
Struts for back door won't work, so we used a pole to prop it open.
OH MY GOSH! Just look at all the cracks in this panel! And all the junk from that foam lining on the side. This is going to take a little imagination!

UGH!
The engine seems to be running okay . . . no apparent, looming problems . . . but we're getting everything checked out. Lucky's INTERIOR is a whole other story . . . I think Rose's work is cut out for her!
So the FUN begins! I wonder how long it will be before we take our first camping trip?
Except for the wheels . . .
This was our SIXTH VW . . .her name was "DEE-CILE" an '82 Diesel. We REALLY liked this one too, but it wasn't very good at climbing hills. Fortunately, we were living in Florida, and Mt. Dora was our highest mountain.

The ripping out has begun, and look at our new seats with arm rests! BUT! I'm thinking it's going to be easier to remove the panels, cover them, only to worry about getting them back in. I know, it looks AWFUL . . . but it's SO MUCH FUN!
I have removed the little panel above the door without too many bad words, so I've decided to remove all the others. I will no doubt need a little help from Papa John!

Nope! Didn't need a bit of help . . . I removed the panels all by myself. It looks like only three will need replacing . . . the sliding door panel, the back hatch panel, and the back panel by the back door.
Thanks to Mad Madeline, from the Vanagon List, we found this shop and LOVED walking around Bill's VW/Audi graveyard. John's looking at the van where we found some fairly nice seats . . . much better than the ones we already purchased last week . . . Oh MY!
This is Bill, the Affordable German, and his positively GORGEOUS Syncro, with a Positively AWESOME Subaru engine.
Even though it doesn't look like much, we have really accomplished quite a bit. The German Motor Shop tuned up the Engine, put in new brakes, new fuel pump, all new distributer parts, new starter and alternator, and new side view mirror. We also got our first set of seats there for a good price, but found some better ones. We have new Hankook RA08 185R14 tires. Had the front end aligned and learned we needed new ball joints, so we did that too. We decided to keep the steel wheels and ordered the chrome VW hubcaps from "Bus Depot" to make 'em pretty! SOooooo the expenses keep piling up! But it's only MONEY! And life keeps getting shorter all the time! Gotta hurry UP before we run down, or the money runs out! (To be continued . . .)

This is a decal on the back of the Van. I REALLY like it! Looks like our ol' '65 Kombi!
