Venue: The Vic Inn, Derby
Well, at first me and my two friends sat down and observed the crowd, to be fair, I noticed that the venue wasn't really filling up very well or as much as I had it expected to, after all The Vibrators are an old punk band and Derby is full with people who like that sort of thing.
An old friend, Chip (singer of Squidhunter) walked past so I had a chat with him and waited for the first band to come on. Now I must say, the first band (Dirty Turtles), were absaloute shite. Not ever have I heard such a load of toss in my life. I later found out, through an interesting chat with Chip on MSN, that they were in fact his best mate's band, which was indeed and embarressment for me. This gig was described as punk, which indeed the last band are, but this band was grunge, at it's worst may I add. The singer could not sing, the drummer was out of beat and they looked about 16 maximum. Now I'm not saying that all young bands are shite, in fact I'm purely against that as I'm in a band myself, but this band should not have been on the bill. They played a poor Nirvana cover and everyone was shouting how wank they were. Which was indeed true.
The second band, The Skankin' Grannies, were an improvement. They were ska-core, I suppose, and were alright for saying they were a three piece. They had a good ska beat and the lead singer was fit, always a good point. They sang a song about skankin' grannies that made me laugh, and then the singer took his top off. Good call. However, at this point, I was still rather drunk and kept having to go to the toilet incredibly regularly as I have a weak bladder. I must say, that most of the songs sounded the same and I was greatly impressed, but I suppose they just weren't my cup of tea and lots of people there seemed to enjoy themselves, and I was tempted to skank, but obviously couldn't due to my state.
After them came the headlining band, The Vibrators, of whom I love and always have done. At this point, all the people who had been at the bar came through to watch them and we all went to the front. Now for saying that they've been at it so long, The Vibrators still have the ability to entertain. The lead singer looked like a bag man as he had a rather big curly mass of hair which he had successfully stuffed underneath a cap. OOH and the bassist was lovely, even if he was 35+. He looked like Sid Vicious and kept putting his leg up on the amp, ooh missus!
unfortunatly, as I was just getting a good view of the bassist, this really random woman came in front of me with her skinhead husband. Now don't get me wrong, they were a lovely couple and were friendly and spoke to me and my friends, but my god they were mad! The man left to the bar and the woman stayed and danced on her own. I must add, she must have elbowed me in the face a good 5 times, now at that mind I didn't really mind as I was pissed out of my face, but in the morning I did, it really did hurt. But anyway, she apologised every time and she looked like she belonged on ward 32 (mental ward). She had very long dreadlocks which weren't the nice kind as they were all really gross and messy and they kept whipping me in the eye. Madness!
After The Vibrators finished their set , we returned to sit down and a skinhead, who looked about 40, chatted me up. He came up to me and kissed my hand etc. Very strange! We walked out the Vic and went to get the bus, as we weren't really in a state that we should get picked up, and anyway it was about 11:30 and there wasn't much chance. So we caught the Night Flyer, and this weird couple were sitting behind us, who had also been to the gig. We had a nice chat them, I think, but I can't really remember. Then we got off the bus, but my friend fell off.
Overall a good night, worth the �5 we paid, but would have been better without support cause they were shite.
