It could be   time to decide to
try and face up to what
   drugs or alcohol has
   done to your life
and to the lives of those
   who have loved you
Here are some  questions. Try to answer honestly.

Remember, there is no disgrace in facing up to the fact that you have a  problem.

 to the following questions.
1 - Have you ever decided to stop drinking
    for a week or so,
   but only lasted
   for a couple of days?
   Yes No
Most problem   drinkers
   and drug users
make all kinds of promises
   to ourselves
and to our families. We could not keep them.
   In recovery we say:
Just for today.
2 - Do you wish people would mind
their own business about your drinking or drug use
   - stop telling you what to do?
   Yes No
If you want  to use or
   drink that's your business,
   if you want to stop,
or you have legal problem and must stop
  you can get help.

3 - Have you ever switched from
one kind of drink or drug to another
in the hope that this would keep
you from suffering consequences?
   Yes No
We   tried all kinds of ways.
   We made our drinks weak.
   Or just drank beer.
Or we tried to only drank or
   use on weekends.
You name it, we tried it.
We switched from speed to cocaine, decided to only smoke pot, ect.
but couldn't make it work out
as planned, we often lost control.
4 - Have you had to have an eye-opener
upon awakening during the past year?
   Yes No
Do you need a  drink or drug to get started,
or to stop shaking? This is a pretty sure sign
that your drinking or using is not just social.
5 - Do you envy people who can drink
or use without getting into trouble?
   Yes No
At one time  or another,
   most of us have
   wondered why we
were not like many other people, who really
can take it or leave it.
6 - Have you had problems connected
with drinking or using during the past year?
   Yes No
Be honest!   Doctors say that if you have a
   chemical dependency problem  and keep
on drinking or using, it will get worse
-- never better. Eventually, you will die,
or end up in an institution for the rest of your life.
The only hope is to stop and get sober.
7 - Has your drinking or using
   caused trouble at home?
   Yes No
Many of  us have said
   that it was
   the people or problems
at home that made us drink, use, or become
   depressed and angry.
We could not see that our drinking or drug use
   just made everything worse.
   Drug & alcohol
   never solve problems
   anywhere or anytime.
8 - Do you ever bring "extra" drinks
or drugs to a party or outing to face
the prospect of being around people, knowing you won't get enough while   you're out?
   Yes No
Most of us used to have a ";few" before we started out if we thought it was  going to be that kind of party.
And if drinks were not served fast enough,
we would go some place else to get more
   or get drugs.
9 - Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking or using any time   you want to, even though you keep getting drunk and using even when you don't   mean to? Do you drink or use against your will?
   Yes No
Many of us kidded ourselves into thinking that we drank and use because we wanted to. In   recovery, we found out that once we started, we couldn't stop. "One is  too many and a thousand is never enough."
Many of us  admit now that we"called in sick"
   lots of times when
the truth was that we were hung-over or on a binge.
10 - Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking   or using?
   Yes No
A   blackoutis when we have been drinking orusing for hours  or days which we cannot remember. This is a pretty sure sign you are   suffering from the problems of addiction.
11 - Do you have "blackouts"
   Yes No
12 - Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you  did not drink or use drugs? Many of us  started to drink and use drugs because it made life seem better, at least for   a while.
The addictive process makes us felt trapped. We drink or use drugs to live  and live to drink  use drugs.
   We were sick and tired
   of being
   sick and tired.
Yes No
Alcoholics Anonymous believes  if the answer is
Yes to FOUR
or more questions,
you are in deep trouble
with drinking or using.
What's your score?
Did you answer YES four
or more times?
If so, you are probably
in trouble with
chemical dependency.

Addiction/ Alcoholism is a
dangerous situation.
We live an out of control existence,
that offers the illusion of control.
Denial of the severity of the
problem is very common.
