Synopsis

1000 years ago, there was a beautiful tennyo (heavenly maiden) who descended to earth. She was bathing in a lake when a fisherman who was passing by, spotted her and was mesmerized by her beauty. Nearby, he saw a hagoromo (feathered robe) and knew that something so beautiful must belong to the tenny. He selfishly stole the hagoromo and when the tennyo found him she asked for her hagoromo, but he lied and said he knew nothing of it. Without her hagoromo, the tennyo was forced to stay on earth where she married the fisherman and eventually had children with him. When she learned from her children that her husband had stolen her hagoromo many years back, in an angry rage, she killed her husband and eventually died, still searching for her hagoromo.

1000 years later, a descendant of the tennyo; Mikage Aya was born with the tennyo spirit inside of her. Her twin brother Aki was the reincarnation of the fisherman and is now searching for his wife and plans to take her back using brute force. Aya, who is now also Ceres the tennyo, will stop at nothing to find her hagoromo, and destroy the Mikage family who had disgraced her and trapped her on earth.

Review

Ayashi no Ceres is one of my all-time favourite anime series. It has everything; romance, action, drama and also a little humour here and there. Anyone who watched Fushigi Yuugi and was looking for more of Yuu Watases work will definitely want to catch Ayashi no Ceres.

The animations in this series were very similar to those of Fushigi Yuugi, though personally I think the characters look slightly more mature. The characters designs are all very beautiful (except Q-san was definitely interesting) and all of the characters were very developed. Everyone had a well defined personally, which was consistent throughout the entire series.

I really liked the music and voices of the series. None of the voices were really all that annoying, and the music was fantastic, all of the background music matched the scenes perfectly.

As for the plot, Ayashi no Ceres is something new and original. It wasnt repetitive like some anime series and it was something we had never seen before.

Personally, I liked the entire series. You know how most of the time the begging or ending of a series ruins the whole story? This isnt the case with Ayashi no Ceres. Every episode kept you interested and made you want to watch more.

A definite must-see for fantasy/romance anime fans.
