Subaru is the principal character in Tokyo Babylon but plays a small (but still significant) part in X. He is a member (and in X) the leader of the Sumeragi clan practice. He spends his time practicing and working as an onmyoujitsu. Before her death, his older twin sister Hokuto lived with him in the area of Shinjuku in Tokyo.
In Tokyo Babylon, Subaru is very naive and innocent. This is most apparent when Seishiro flirts with him; he doesn't know how to react (and is very surprised when he finds out Seishiro isn't kidding about it). Because he and his sister are so alone and so far from their home in Kyoto, he is also very vulnerable and fragile. Obviously he is a very different person when he makes his return in X. He is now distrustful, serious, reserved, and quiet. This is because his best friend and love interest in Tokyo Babylon, Sakurazuka Seishiro, is the man who murders his sister.
Subaru is a prime example of the bishounen found in CLAMP's works. He is very stylized and feminine. He's also very hot (duh). In Toyko Babylon, when he wears his black hat, black gloves, and black suit, it's sometimes hard to tell if he's a boy or not. One can also see this when he and Hokuto are dressed up and standing next to each other. |
