Background

Movement of newborn resuscitation has been a breakthrough in history of neonatal health. The resuscitation guidelines were modified recently to incorporate the new scientific knowledge gathered in past couple of years. The authors have developed an easy wall calendar based on the latest guidelines-2000, which can be used as a bedside tool for ready reference.

About the Calendar

This laminated calendar is of 15 X 20 inches size that can be hanged on the wall. It is designed in 4 colors for easy readability and comprehension. It provides a compact bedside tool for the ready reference. It depicts the flow chart of resuscitation, meconium guideline and various levels of neonatal care needed in different situations. It also provides details such as endotracheal tube size, tip to lip distance, what to do when there is no chest rise on bag and mask ventilation, indications and drug dosages, prematurity pointer and special consideration. It indicates the time limit for different interventions during newborn resuscitation.

Conclusion

The multi colored, easy to read, compact wall calendar on ‘Resuscitation of newborn at birth’ provides a bedside tool for the ready reference.

AN INDIGENOUSLY MANUFACTURED REUSABLE MECONIUM CONNECTOR

Sukhmeet Singh1, Ramesh Agarwal2

1Senior Consultant Pediatrician, Ludhiana, 2 Division of Neonatology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

Background

Resuscitation of a newborn through meconium stained liquor poses a significant challenge for the attending pediatrician. In addition to intrapartum suctioning of mouth, nose and posterior pharynx, if baby is nonvigorous then there is need for suctioning of trachea immediately after the baby is born. The suctioning of trachea requires a number of equipment including a meconium connector. Meconium connector is not available in India and there has always been felt need felt to have a proper connector to facilitate the process of endotracheal suction.

About the connector

The Connector developed by the authors is a sturdy reusable/autoclavable item made up of stainless steel that can be used for endotracheal suctioning of a nonvigorous baby born through meconium stained liquor. It has three ports- one for connecting endotracheal tube, one for thumb control of suction and third for connecting suction tube. Port connecting suction tube is such that suction tubes with different calibers can be easily connected to it.

Conclusion

The new sturdy reusable meconium connector can be used for easy suction of trachea in a nonvigorous baby born through meconium stained liquor.
