In the silent lonely night, hiding from the streetlight in the shadow of a telephone pole, the young man was waiting for something, and he didn't know what. He looked down the street to his right and watched the moon reveal itself from behind gray-white clouds, framed on both sides by trees, like some manifestation of the Cheshire cat. "Twas brillig and the slithy toves
Looking down he noticed in the moonlight a plain yellow fire hydrant near him throwing a shadow reminiscent of a cross. Christ carried a cross. Even in the darkness of the night without a soul in sight God is able to remind him of the great sacrifice he endured for all. He takes it as a sign of encouragement, his first girlfriend in his life had just broken up with him four days previous, and this is the subject predominantly on his mind. Brenda's reasoning had been she didn't have the time and that they'd rushed into the relationship. A car drove slowly past; probably suspicious as to what this dark clothed character was doing hiding from the moonlight in the shadows.
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe
Today had been his first day back to work since the breakup; Brenda worked at the same place he did. Luckily today had been her day off; he wasn't sure how awkward seeing her was going to be. The two of them had agreed to be friends, but how would that be possible was his main question. Ever since he'd met her, their relationship had been a romantic one; they'd never just had a regular friendship. He saw now why people say you should become good friends with the person before any romantic entanglement ensue. The clouds drifted over the moon.
All mimsy were the borogoves
He'd been worrying the past couple days about what his coworkers would think. He'd told his best friend at work first. Mike's caring response had been: "Really? That's fucked up. Are you guys still friends at least?" He had answered yes, but the question remained in his mind. It was a very complicated situation really, Mike's girlfriend was Brenda's cousin and she also worked there. Leaning against the telephone pole he noticed the Cheshire cat having fun in the clouds between trees.
And the mome raths outgrabe.
He went to her cousin next, he didn't talk with Hazel much but now he had an excuse. To his surprise she was very sympathetic. When he told her the reasoning for the breakup she managed to raise another question, "How do you feel about it?" He'd answered that he was miserable but getting better. Hazel said she'd talk to Brenda. Hazel got him to thinking, was he really that miserable anymore? Four days had passed and the effects were definitely wearing off, it seemed a bit quick. Were girls really that important at this stage in his life?
Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
Next he went to the resident mom at work. She wasn't really that much older than him, but she was married with kids and had a very motherly way of looking at things. Vivianna was surprised to hear about it. "You'll be alright." She said. She then went on with a very interesting point. She said that sometimes when someone dumps you and you get over them the dumper then realizes what a great thing they passed up and miss you, but it's too late. Was this a possible opportunity for future revenge perhaps?
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
He'd never realized before what great friends he'd had until his heart had been broken. When leaving work he told the manager, Herman, about the incident. Brenda was Herman's favorite employee; he was also very surprised. "I thought you guys were doing good!" was his response. He did have some good advice though. He said that if you really like her that much, keep trying, she might just need time. Now the question in his mind did he really still love her enough to keep trying? He considered the possibility of trying again, but he wanted to be careful about trying just for the sake of trying or would it actually be for love? He heard the sound of some animal down the street, was that a frog? He couldn't tell.
Beware the Jubjub bird
The last coworker he ended up telling he really had no motivation to tell. He was kind of a joker and not the nicest guy. Joe had made some joke about Brenda and he'd called her his girlfriend. He told Joe the news. "You serious? There's someone out there for you, don't be fuckin' bummed about it." Talk about surprises, it was encouraging though.
And shun the frumious Bandersnatch!
He never had realized that talking to five people that he didn't know that well could be so productive for him. It was like different aspects of his mind had manifested themselves in these people and voiced his thoughts for him. He was now sure as to what he was going to do. He stepped into the moonlight and began his journey.
And the mome raths outgrabe.
