The following sentences and short paragraphs have been designed for you to test your typing speed. We will start with one minute tests. If you have a timer, set it to one minute and see if you can complete a test in that time.
First, turn on your Spellchecker feature so that any errors are highlighted.
Do not stop to correct your typing errors. This way you can make note of any recurring weaknesses and work to correct them. Keep working on one Test till you can type it without errors.
The first few sentence tests tell you about how words per minutes are worked out.
A: TEN WORD TESTS
A1
A typed word is counted as any five keystrokes.
A2
This includes the Shift key, space or punctuation.
A3
Ten words are a total of fifty consecutive strokes.
B: FIFTEEN WORD TESTS
B1
Do not stop to correct your errors in these first tests but check them out.
B2
Work to correct your weaknesses. Practise typing them correctly six times.
B3
Completing a 15 word test correctly in one minute equals 15wpm gross speed.
C: TWENTY WORD TESTS

The beautiful scenic country of New Zealand is situated in the South Pacific to the east of Australia.

New Zealand consists of three main islands: North Island, South Island and the smaller Stewart Island.

People travel between North and South Islands by plane or InterIsland passenger and vehicle ferries.
D: TWENTY-FIVE WORD TESTS

The ferry crosses Cook Strait and cruises beautiful Queen Charlotte Sounds between Wellington, NZ's Capital City, and Picton.

The Cook Strait crossing (named after Captain James Cook) takes about three hours. Some crossings are calm, others very choppy.

The splendour of Queen Charlotte Sounds, like Fiordland in Western Southland in the South Island, is an amazing place to visit.
E: THIRTY WORD TESTS

NZ's East Coast has many stretches of white sand and rolling surf which attract NZ and overseas surfers. They are popular NZ family holiday places.

The beaches on the South Island West Coast have coarser black sand and much of its coastline and some of the East Coast is massive, touring cliffs.

In the north, New Zealand's largest city Auckland is called the 'City of Sails' because of the thousands of yachts in its harbours or out sailing.

New Zealand is a land of contrasts, which attract thousands of overseas tourists every year to climb, ski or snowboard our mountains, swim, fish or cruise on our lakes and rivers.

The hottest places in New Zealand are Kaitaia in the far north and Alexandra in Central Otago in the lower South Island. In winter Alexandra can be coldest with frosts and snow.
G: FORTY WORD TESTS

The South Island of New Zealand has a long range of mountains called The Southern Alps running north and south on the western side of the island. There is our highest, much climbed peak, Mount Cook.

Between The Southern Alps and the West Coast is a fantastic scenic drive taking the Haast Pass road. Here is our great rain forest. Most overseas and local tours include this route in their Itinerary.

New Zealand is a very sport oriented country and sometimes hosts world events. Sports include tennis, golf, yachting, canoeing, cruising, cricket, soccer, rugby, basketball, netball, swimming, surf lifesaving, athletics, riding.

Watching events where they take place is fine but many can only watch at home as the event is screened on our TVs. New Zealand is proud too of our sporting participants who have entered and gained medals in many sporting events including Olympic Games

Masters' Games are very popular in New Zealand as in many other countries and NZ swimmers were really proud in the year 2002 to host the FINA World Masters Swimming Champs at Christchurch in the South Island, at which I gained 10th place medals for 100 m and 200 m backstroke.

New Zealand has many large attractive lakes in each island. In the mid-lower South Island, towards the west, there are Lakes Wanaka and Hawea at the south end of the Haast Pass, Lake Wakatipu with the tourist town of Queenstown, and Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau leading to Milford Sound and the majestic Mitre Peak.

Some challenging events which draw overseas sports people include the annual Coast to Coast involving running, cycling and kayaking from the West Coast, through mountain passes to the East Coast, and the Iron Man including running, cycling, swimming. I am proud one of my sons twice took part in the Ironman.
