Two Spirits * A Homosexual Tradition
By KayLee Armstrong
Many moons before any of us started dealing with our sexuality our Native American Indian brothers and sisters had already accepted us for who we were. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender are just a few of the labels that are attached to our life style today. Before white men encountered the Native American Indians we would have been respected in the community with the title of 'Two-Spirits.'
Two-Spirits is defined just as it is literally spoken. Most Native American Indians believed that we are all born with two spirits. Only one spirit materializes here on earth either the male or the female. Our other spirit is still a part of us and is revered as our higher self. Maybe the higher self is just the higher power that so many people are seeking. Sometimes the spirit part of us that did not materialize has a very strong impact on our lives. There are times when we lean toward that higher self and act out that spirits desires. Transgender persons really do feel like they have been born in the wrong body.
I had run across the concept of Two-Spirits about six or eight months ago by accident. I though it was quite interesting but did not really give it much more thought. For some reason my higher self lead me back to it. I typed in 'Two Spirits' on my Google tool bar and was amazed at the information available. I found several very good articles dealing with the subject.
I started analyzing my Two-Spirits and just what it meant to me. I was born a Lesbian Womyn yet I had a male higher self? Oh, Give Me A Break I thought! Then my friend Dustin pointed out how I dress when I am out hiking. I dress in more masculine clothes when in the outdoors. It is more comfortable when I am dressed that way for a hike and I feel sexy. My daytime job requires that I dress more feminine, never in a pair of jeans. I started realizing how I was finding balance with my Two-Spirits. My higher self likes being more butch.
I shared some of my research with Dustin and he started analyzing his Two-Spirits. We talked in-depth about the concept and how it was related to our lives. Dustin is a very manly gay man with no femanin traits that I can see. But then we started analysis his emotions. Dustin is a very passionate person. He wants to be in love. He has not had sex with another guy in over a year and has been single twice that long. He thinks that sex and love should go together. Oh, my GAWD Dustin you are starting to sound like a woman, I said. We really do have Two-Spirits and Dustin's female higher self wants to be in love with that special man.
If Dustin and I were straight we probably would make a compatible couple. We have become very close friends but realized that our plumbing does not match pre say. So if every human is born with two spirits think of all the joy the straight couples could have. Yet they are forced into a society where they have to act out their body's gender and block out their higher self. How sad it would be for me to be straight with the knowledge I have gained learning about Two-Spirits.
I guess we Homosexuals can consider ourselves quite lucky. We have a long way to go to be accepted and exulted in society like the Native American Indian Two-Spirits were. Most of us have adopted the concept of Two-Spirits whether we realize it or not. Many of my Lesbian, Gay, and Transgender friends have learned to live with their Two-Spirits. They live a balanced life with the higher self and the spirit that was materialized. So come with me my Two-Spirit friends as we walk down the path of life. My higher self and I want to get to know your Two-Spirits.
