Nairn County FC in 2007
If ever proof was needed that the old cliche "never read anything into pre-season results" was true then Nairn County provided it in the summer of 2007.
First Division side Livingston were first up at Station Park and dished out a 6-0 hammering. This was followed by an away trip to Division Three outfit Stenhousemuir who also over-ran Nairn coming away with a 5-0 win. There was no let up in the next game either as Peterhead romped home by five goals to nil at Station Park. So far County had conceded 16 goals and scored none in three games but it was the next result that had the doom mongers predicting the worst. An away bounce match against Bishopmill United seemed like the perfect opportunity to bang in some goals and get the confidence going in the team. After all, the Bish finished season 2006-07 in mid-table of the third tier of the north junior ranks, a division that Nairn St Ninian were promoted out of the same season. After several chances went abegging, it all seemed to be going to plan when Angus Lawrie headed County in front. But two fantastically taken goals turned the game on its head and the home side survived a Nairn onslaught to pick up a 2-1.
The final pre-season match was away at Strathspey Thistle, a side one division above Bishopmill, and a narrow 2-1 Nairn win thanks to goals from Brooks and Brian Macleod did nothing to stop the alarm bells ringing among some.
The first competitive match came on July 31 in the North of Scotland Cup against Forres Mechanics at home and County put all of their close season woes behind them to record a convincing 3-1. Duncan Jones gave the home side the lead before summer arrival Shaun Kerr announced himself to the County fans in the best possible way with a debut double.
The first league match of the season was an away assignment at Fort William, a place Les Fridge knows only too well can be unpredictable on the opening day. But Nairn took care of business with another 3-1 win, Barron and Kerr (2) the scorers.
The first round of the inaugural SFA Challenge Cup pitted Nairn against Forres Mechanics for the second time in the season already and County made it two wins from two against their rivals with the in-form Kerr grabbing the only goal in a 1-0 victory.
Ross County ended Nairn's hopes of a third successive North Cup final appearance with a 4-1 win at Victoria Park. Nairn didn't make life easy for themselves when Brian Macleod was sent off but Kerr continued his hot scoring streak with a fine solo goal in the second half.
Macleod's late penalty ensured that Nairn grabbed all three points from a scrappy home clash with Rothes in the league before the same player did it again from 12 yards seven days later against Keith in the Challenge Cup quarter final. This time his penalty cancelled out a

Wick were the opponents in the first week of September on league duty at Station Park and the visitors took a surprise first half lead. It forced Fridge into action and he threw on Chris Finnigan up front. The ex-Elgin man made his first telling contribution in a Nairn shirt as County turned things around to win 2-1 thanks to a Barron double, the second being a breathtaking, long range lob.
The win meant that when Nairn travelled to face Inverurie seven days later, only they and their hosts boasted 100 percent records in the league. Unfortunately it was County who lost theirs at Harlaw Park, falling to a 2-0 defeat.
Clach were in town for the next match and Wayne Mackintosh fired Nairn ahead with his first goal of the year. But Clach struck back in the second half and only a John Campbell penalty save ensured County claimed a share of the spoils.
A change in regulations meant that the Scottish Cup first round was opened up to all non-league clubs and in their first tie since 1986, County travelled to face fellow Highland League club Rothes. Goals from Barron, Mackintosh, Gregg Main and a first for the club from Chris Finnigan contributed towards a 4-1 win.
It was back to league duty at champions Keith next and the home side raced into a 4-0 lead before the hour-mark. County staged a late fightback and snatched two goals through lone range efforts from Jones and Mackintosh. But a late Keith strike but the icing on a 5-2 win for the Maroons.
Nairn bounced back the following week as they continued their good form against local rivals Forres. They dumped the Can Cans 2-0 at Station Park with the goals coming from Jones and Kerr.
Summer signing Kerr continued his renaissance seven days later by netting both goals in the 2-0 win over Lossiemouth at Grant Park which set Nairn up for theScottish Cup showdown at Buckie.
Wayne Mackintosh: Scored three goals in as many games
Unfortunately it was the home side who progressed to round three as some familiar faces came back to haunt County. David MacRae was involved in the build up to the first goal before Tony Low's cross was headed home by former Nairn loanee Lewis MacKinnon to put County two goals behind after only 12 minutes. Despite the home side's Andy Matheson being sent off after the break, they were still able to add a third through Matthew Edmond before Martin MacDonald pulled one back for Nairn. But MacRae killed any thoughts of a comeback with a late solo goal.
County bounced back though on the first Saturday of November with an astute and convincing performance away at Brora which yielded a 2-0 win, a scoreline that flattered the hosts. Kerr and Martin MacDonald provided the goals.
There was a chance for Scottish Cup revenge seven days later when Buckie Thistle visited Station Park but a late goal by Tony Low claimed all three points for the Jags.
That was followed up by another home defeat, this time to Cove Rangers. The Aberdeen outfit took the lead in the second half but Martin MacDonald hauled County level with only two minutes remaining. With Nairn pushing bodies forward in search of a winner, Cove struck an injury time winner to floor County and claim all three points. It was the first time in 2007 that Nairn lost back-to-back home fixtures.
The final month of the year started with an away trip to Fraserburgh and it was a game in which County made an explosive start. Goals from Finnigan, Scott Graham and Martin MacDonald put the visitors three goals up inside 25 minutes. The hosts pulled two back in the

second half but Nairn held on for a 3-2 victory and could even have stretched their lead. It was an important victory for the team as it was their first league win away against an Aberdeenshire side under Fridge's stewardship. The only other previous away win came at Inverurie Locos after extra time in the Highland League Cup earlier in the year. Now that the deadlock has been broken, the side will now be looking to put right their form against the Aberdeenshire clubs and banishing the away day blues.
County boss Fridge made his final addition to the squad of 2007 when he captured Maltese international Jonathon Holland. He became the club's first internationally capped player but is yet to make his debut due to a combination of lack of full fitness and postponed fixtures.
The final match of 2007 was the away league fixture at Buckie on December 8 after frost meant the home match against Fort William and the trip to Rothes were scrapped. The Jags eased past an off-colour Nairn side 3-0 to record their third win of the season against Fridge's men. It means that Nairn finish the calendar year in the healthy position of sixth in the Highland League table on 22 points.
One word that can be used to describe the performance during 2007 is "consistent". The only away defeats have come against Huntly, Fraserburgh, Buckie, Keith and Inverurie, all sides who finished above Nairn in the Highland League table last season and have title ambitions. On the other hand, potentially tricky matches against Forres, Wick, Rothes, Lossiemouth, Brora and Fort William have all been won, whether they be at home or away. Credit must go to the team for maintaining that level of consistency despite the rather large turnover of players in the summer. The main disappointment was the late-goal defeats to Buckie and Cove at home and also the dropped points against Clach at Station Park after the side had made their home patch a bit of a fortress.
The aim for 2008 must be to maintain that level of consistency against teams below Nairn in the league both home and away while also pushing on from that away victory at Fraserburgh and picking up a few more wins on the ventures to Aberdeenshire.
In the meantime, have a very good New Year and enjoy 2008 with Nairn County.
