Post Match Reaction: Back To Winning Ways
Two goals in each half ensured that Nairn County chalked up their first of 2008 as they defeated lowly Fort William in the midweek fixture at Station Park.
The home side broke the deadlock when Martin MacDonald was on hand to head home Duncan Jones' free kick before Chris Finnigan diverted Willie Barron's cross into the net, again with a header. Then County ended the game as a contest 10 minutes after half time when Scott Graham's cross was knocked past Fort goalkeeper Ritchie Munro by his own defender Danny MacIntosh. And Jones put the
icing on the cake five minutes from time by cracking home a 30-yard free kick.
Boss Les Fridge spoke to
Nairn County FC Online minutes after the final whistle. He said: "It was a good performance. I thought we approached the game well and the story of our season has been that we have created so many chances in games and just not been taking them. Tonight we scored four goals and although one of them was an own goal, I thought the other three were all good goals.
"But the amount of chances we created was very pleasing but on the down side, we have to start taking these chances."
Opponents Fort William have been in turmoil of late and have reportedly been struggling to even source enough players to field a team.
Fridge said: "We did not know what to expect from them (Fort William) tonight. They were talking abour bringing in trialists and doing this and doing that. But they were 2-0 down to Huntly on Saturday and managed to get back to two each before Huntly obviously went on an convincingly won the game. So Fort were an unknown commodity for us tonight and
Whenever Chris Finnigan scores, Nairn win
we just had to go about our own job which I thought we did."
He added: "I did not think we were really under any pressure (during the game) and it was nice to get another clean sheet. We scored four goals and like I said, I thought it could have been a lot more."
Forward Chris Finnigan grabbed his third goal of the season - his first at Station Park - and all three have come in Nairn wins.
Fridge said: "It was good to see Chris score. He's been working hard along with Scott Graham so it was really good to see him get a goal."
Sweeper Duncan Jones rounded off the scoring with yet another goal from a free kick which has been a hallmark of his time at the club.
Fridge said: "He (Jones) is so dangerous with anything from about 20 yards out to 40 yards out. He actually played a great ball in from a free kick in a wide area for Martin MacDonald's goal as well. But overall, I thought it was a very good performance and the only down side was that we created so many chances in both halves of the game and I thought we were trying to walk the ball into the net at times. But it was a 4-0, a clean sheet and three points."
The manager was forced into a half time alteration as Brian Macleod came off because of injury and was replaced by recent addition Andrea Coletto.
He said: "Brian took a knock in the first half and had a bruised ankle so we had to replace him at half time."
County travel to Banff on league duty this Saturday as they take on title hopefuls Deveronvale.
The boss said: "It is always a tough task through there. They are a very good team and in the three and a half years that I've been here, they have always been a very big, strong, physical team. But we'll go through there and approach the game in the same way that we always do and we'll try and get something out of it."
