Scottish Cup Draw: Trip to Meadowbank For County
The draw for the first round of the Scottish Cup has paired Nairn County with an away trip to face East of Scotland league outfit Edinburgh City. The tie will take place on Saturday September 27 at the 16,500 capacity Meadowbank Stadium in the capital, venue for the 1970 and 1986 Commonwealth Games. County boss Les Fridge will be hoping his side can write their names into club folklore like the Nairn team did on their last visit to the ground, when County famously dumped Second Division side Meadowbank Thistle out of the cup in 1986.
It is sure to be a tough tie for the visitors with Edinburgh currently sitting second in the East of Scotland Premier Division with seven points from their opening three games. But Fridge was in an upbeat mood looking ahead to the match in what is sure to be a huge month for the club with the North of Scotland Cup final taking place only six days before the trip Auld Reekie. He said: "They are a very good side and I have already been on the phone to speak to a few people about them and I am going to have them watched a couple of times as well. But they are a very good side and of that there is no doubt."
He added: "It is a wee bit into the unknown and I will try and speak to the people who were at Clach last year when they played against them in the Scottish Cup. Whether they will still have the same team down there or if they've changed it about a bit I don't know. But I've got a couple of contacts down there and like I say, I'll be having them watched and I'll be getting some information on them.
Edinburgh City will host Nairn in the first round of the Scottish Cup
"But it really is a trip into the unknown for us. It's obviously an away game and it will be a long journey down but hopefully we can go there and get a result and get into the next round of the cup."
The East of Scotland League side take on Vale of Leithen this Saturday in the Challenge Cup and then Preston Athletic the week on league duty before their cup clash with County. The winners of the tie will go into the hat for the second round which will take place on Saturday October 25.
