Post-Match Reaction: County Climb To Top Spot
A deserved three points came Nairn County's way after victory over Keith as Grand Slam September continued in style with Les Fridge's men climbing to joint top spot in the Highland League table.
The home side were reduced to 10 men just after half time when Gregg Main was shown a second yellow card. But that only seemed to spur County on as they took the lead through Duncan Jones only three minutes later. Incredibly, that lead was doubled after only another three minutes when goal machine Shaun Kerr snatched his eighth of the season. Martin Wood pulled a goal back for the visitors
five minutes from time to ensure it was a nervy finale but in truth it was Nairn who could have grabbed another goal when both Brian Macleod and sub Willie Barron passed up one-on-one opportunities.
After the match, County boss Les Fridge said: "For the last 10 minutes we had to hold on and its not easy to hold off a team of Keith's quality with just 10 men but we are obviously delighted. We have a busy couple of weeks coming up and hopefully our run can continue."
After a slow first half, Nairn came flying out of the traps after the interval despite the set back of Main's red card. Fridge added: "I thought we were playing well within ourselves (in the first half) and we could have lifted it up a gear or two and start moving the ball about a bit quicker but we actually didn't do that until we were down to 10 men because we had to. Once we started doing that we created a few chances and there were one or two one-on-ones we should have scored and we still kept on creating chances with 10 men."
The manager refused to criticise referee Martyn Kerrigan for dismissing Main for two yellow card offences. He said: "At the end of the day, referees have a hard enough job as it is and there are going
Gregg Main: Sent off against Keith but available for Sunday's cup final
to be decisions that they get right and there are going to be decisions they get wrong but they'll make the decisions as they see fit. Gregg (Main) was sent off for two tackles which is disappointing because he isn't actually a malicious player."
