The package was wrapped in
glossy rose pink paper. Its unevenly
tucked corners and haphazardly slapped on strips of scotch tape gave off this
adorably clumsy I-don’t-know-anything-about-wrapping-presents-but-I-did-my-best
feel that Kaname Chidori liked. But she
decided not to take any chances.
“Sousuke, if this is what I think it is---”
“I did all necessary precautions
and guarantee that the item will not inflict physical or psychological harm to
your person.”
That didn’t sound good. “This is a birthday present, isn’t
it?”
“Affirmative.”
“From you?”
“Yes.”
She
stared at him, but he only stared back.
A waitress appeared, wiping hands on the front of her short checkered
outfit, and started clearing the table next to theirs. The clanging of spoons and forks against
glass and china reminded her of the scene they made a quick getaway from ---
various explosives going off in unexpected places, a huge quicksand trap,
people hanging from trees screaming bloody murder. It was rather sad, Chidori thought. Not even on her birthday would Sousuke stop being Sousuke.
Then
again, it was the same overly paranoid, trigger-happy Sousuke who asked if they
could go somewhere quiet, because he wanted to give her something. It was the same Sousuke who bought --- and
worked with --- pink wrapping paper.
That alone was enough to forgive him.
She
flashed him her best smile. “Thank
you.” Then brightly, “Is it all right
if I open it?”
“Yes.” The tips of his ears were red.
It took
her a while to work through the layers of scotch tape (“A safety precaution,
because you’ll never know what would happen”),
