Luck
was definitely not on his side that night.
Hiro frowned and hefted the fake gun onto his shoulder, trying to figure
out what to do next. It was a child's
game, simple enough: there were five shelves full of sitting ducks, and all he
had to do was knock three of them over so he could win the prize --- a big pale
yellow tiger stuffed toy, the kind Kisa loved.
But
twenty minutes and two thousand yen later, he still hadn't managed to knock
down anything. It was incredibly
frustrating. Hiro thought he had pretty
good aim, and he always won something at fairs, so he couldn't understand why
it was now taking him so long to win.
The booth owner had lost interest in him a long time ago; he was now
busy setting up toys on new shelves, tunelessly humming along to the strains of
a pop song wafting in the busy air.
"Ojisan,"
Hiro called out, "let me try again."
The
booth owner turned around and gave him a look.
"Again?"
"Again,"
Hiro firmly repeated, fishing out two hundred yen coins from his pocket and
setting them on the wooden ledge.
The
booth owner shrugged as if to say, /it's all up to you really/, took the money,
and handed him new bullets.
