He knew nothing about himself, but they didn't care. They took him in, raised him, gave him a name and a Self to go with it. He became Kinomoto Fujitaka, a friendly, kind-hearted child with a pleasant disposition. He became Fujitaka --- the one born in January, the one who loved to read, the giver of small treats, the apprentice cook, everybody’s favorite brother, the one who liked mornings and music and insects and sugar. Fujitaka dreamed of seeing the world, of making his siblings happy, of owning a library as great as the universe.

“That’s who Fujitaka is,” he said to the woman beside him, as they slowly walked hand in hand down the busy street. They were getting him glasses downtown, then heading off to the market for some fruit and meat afterwards. Somewhere along the way he fell to talking about the past he knew nothing about, of having a Self he never knew, about the person he was now. He was sure she would laugh (most people would, he thought), but she only smiled at him reassuringly and squeezed his hand.

“That’s what you are, you mean.”  Her eyes were soft.  “You are Fujitaka, my boy.”

“They say I am.”  He hesitated.  “But what if I’m not meant to be him?”

"Hmm." She leaned her head to one side and pretended to think, the small rushes of silver hanging from her ears brushing against the side of her face as she did so. “Do you hate being Fujitaka?”

He stared at her. They had slowed down to a halt in front of a shop that read ‘Ikura Megane-Ya’.

“Do you?” She asked again.

“No,” he finally said, truthfully.

She smiled. “Good.” With her free hand, she slid the door open. There came the faint tinkling of chimes, the smell of coffee, and the sound of the shop owner coughing. “If I were you, I wouldn’t hate being Fujitaka either. I think he’s a very nice, smart boy." Her smile turned mischievous. "It's just that he has such terrible vision.”
