There was a soft excuse me before the door creaked open and Mai
came in, bearing a cup of tea in one hand and an assortment of small packages
in the other. Naru gave no indication that he heard her, and went on reading.
"Here you go." Mai
set the cup near his elbow, carefully avoiding the small stacks of paper and
reference books.
A page flipped noiselessly.
"Also," Mai
continued, surprisingly tolerant of her boss' behavior, "these are for
you."
Naru looked up.
There were four small boxes, each wrapped in sparkly paper and tied with
a red bow. Mai held up each one for his benefit and placed them on top of his
desk. "This is from Masako, this is from Ayako, and this is from
Yasuhara-kun... Ah, don't worry, he gave everybody chocolates. I think it's
supposed to be a joke. And this one... Hey."
Naru had gone back to reading.
For a moment Mai seriously contemplated yanking Naru's head back and
stuffing the packages down his lovely pale throat, but then she spied his hand,
the one that wasn't holding the book, pointing down at the spot on the desk
near his teacup.
Put it...there?
Shrugging, she started
gathering the boxes on the desk.
"The last one." Naru
sounded impatient.
Ah.
Mai placed the last box next to
his teacup. She couldn't keep from smiling, but it was all right. He was still
reading. "That one's from me."
"Mm."
"I'll be outside if you
need anything."
Without waiting for a reply,
Mai left the room in high spirits.
