Your mother will kill me, he murmurs against her neck, and she lets out a laugh that sounds nothing like a laugh. There are tears everywhere --- on the pillow, the front of his sweater, on his skin, when he trails his fingers down her face. She doesn't realize where they're coming from. (Oh dear. She dabs at the soaked coverlet.)

The sky outside her window turns red for a brief, shining moment.

When he touches his lips to her forehead for the last time, her hand guides his own to the hollow in her chest, and keeps it there.
