smile, you say, and i lean against the piano to watch you watch me

and we watching each other seems 

perfectly natural

mindless like breathing

warm like the sun now streaming through the windows

and falling on my cheek, your shoulder,

my hand, your hand,

your finger now drifting closer to

gently coax the side of my lip

into a lopsided upward curve

commonly known as

a smile,

and you say it again,

this time more gently,

 

smile

 

and i who had always believed that

smiling for the sake of smiling is pointless,          

suddenly find myself      

smiling at you.
