Backstage notes: *After the cameras went off, the Undertaker and Vince did the Undertaker pose at the top of the ramp while the King helped J.R. get up and hand him his hat, to a large pop. *The reason that Steve "Brooklyn Brawler" Lombardi got a match last night on Metal/Jakked with Perry Saturn was because Crash Holly, who was scheduled to work against Saturn, had an elbow injury that he informed management was too painful to allow him to work. While they could have used Alliance talent that was at the show to fill in, since they have yet to explain in the storyline how that could have happened (since the Alliance is no more), Lombardi got the shot. Lombardi is said to always be ready to work and is a company guy. *Former amateur champion Danny Hodge was backstage last night. He looked to be in great shape and still follows the business. Somehow, I don't think kissing keysters was what Hodge remembers from his days in the ring. *Triple H was backstage last night, helping in a creative capacity. So were Stephanie and Shane McMahon. *As we have reported in recent weeks, the current direction of the WWF is fully in the hands of Vince McMahon. He is the one who is laying the outlines and the writing team is working within them. I knew about Ric Flair entering the WWF well before he appeared on TV, thanks to this very newsletter, and at that point I was excited. Ric Flair, an experienced and knowledgeable man who has been in wrestling for Lord know how many years, would be with the WWF. Good can only come of this, especially as I read the 'will not wrestle' line. However, what do I see on Raw? Ric Flair taking the WWF and wrestling back ten years. Prancing round like a fool, screaming till his head went the colour of a tomato and shouting more 'Whoo!'s than Kurt Angle has in his entire life, Ric Flair took a chainsaw to the WWF's long attempt to make wrestling more credible. As regular readers will know, I am one for making wrestling mainstream, so that fans can watch it without friends or colleagues coming up to them and suggesting their intelligence is lower than average for watching it. I thought the days of WWF fans being ridiculed by non-believers ended when Undertaker became a bad-ass, Jeff Jarrett moved to that 'other' company, and cheesey factions like 'The Nation of Domination' and the 'Truth Comission' were abolished. But now, the non-believers have had a huge weapon added to their arsenal, and that would be Ric Flair giving himself a heart attack every time he steps into the ring. I said to my friend, who is also a hard-core fan, that if Ric Flair should make such a huge a$$ of himself and do more than 50 whoo's on a single TV program I would stop watching the WWF. You might say 'he'd never do that many' - well people have already started talking about a McMahon/Flair match, and God knows I'll be counting then.
