Happy B-Day old girl! -The Rob Van Dam/Rock promo was pulled off Smackdown last week because television producer Kevin Dunn didn't like the way it came out. The promo, which saw the Rock do his usual spiel on Van Dam and RVD playing as if he was zoning out, was said to be pretty funny by those who saw it live. There was one part where Rock asked RVD if he was following what he was saying and Rob said that he was just spacing out. That led to speculation among many that a possible drug inference got it pulled. In the end, it was Dunn's decision. -There are reports going around the internet saying that Paul Heyman was against the WWF bringing in Ric Flair. Those reports are not true. That's the word from Linda McMahon, CEO of WWF Entertainment, who also told analysts during a conference call about fiscal second- quarter earnings that she will soon hire a full-time Hollywood-based programming executive to coordinate the deluge of ideas flowing into the federation for theatricals, TV movies and series. For the quarter ended Oct. 26, WWFE saw revenues fall off dramatically to $98.2 million from $111.9 million a year ago; net income was halved from $9.5 million to $4.8 million this quarter. McMahon blamed ``softness in our ratings, attendance and pay-per- view buys during the quarter,'' reinforced by ``the continued economic downturn and the impact of the Sept. 11 tragedy.'' Ratings are off for both the UPN Thursday night ``WWF Smackdown'' and the TNN Monday night ``WWF Raw,'' at least in part because ''we haven't delivered story lines as compelling'' as the shows' fans are used to, McMahon said. ADDING FLAIR But wrestler-entrepreneur Rick Flair, formerly of World Championship Wrestling (the company that the WWF bought early this year), has signed with Vince McMahon, chairman of the WWF and Linda McMahon's husband. Linda McMahon said WWF writers are planning a story arc that will turn Vince and Flair into powerful on-air antagonists, creating the kind of top-of-the-lungs conflict that wrestling fans dote on. She added that even though she wants to get WWF personalities into movies and TV shows, ``we won't do it at the expense of our main brand'' -- the 200 or so live events every year, 52 of which go out live over TNN, another 52 on tape for UPN and a dozen or more for pay-per-view. McMahon said there's very little chance she'd allow one of her star wrestlers to take the lead in an action-adventure series, for example, because it would prevent him or her from performing in arenas for six months or more each year. ENRAPT BY 'SCORPION' But she's enthusiastic about Universal's forthcoming ``The Scorpion King,'' a sequel to ``The Mummy Returns'' that stars Dwayne ``the Rock'' Johnson: If it's a hit, the Rock's appearances on TNN, UPN and PPV will probably attract more viewers than they do now. Also, Linda and Vince McMahon will each get an executive producer's credit on the movie, pocketing an undisclosed fee for their approval of U's casting of the Rock. "WWF Divas," the UPN prime-time special, will center on a photo shoot on location in the Bahamas featuring such muscular bombshells as Lita, Trish Stratus, Torrie Wilson and Stacy Keibler. McMahon said it's the first of a potential seven specials a year that the WWF could produce as part of an overall deal with Viacom, which owns, among other networks, UPN and TNN. ===================================================================== Comment//============================================================ Vile Thoughts The clock struck 12 on the Alliance. In one of the worst kept secrets since "I did not have sex with that intern," Kurt Angle turned on the Alliance, and saved the WWF from disaster. All was right with the world again. A funny thing happened on the way to nirvana though. Angle decided to stay a heel, which he does so well. What? 3:16, on the other hand, is turning face again. I have to admit, that surprised me. We haven't seen dual personality switches since Lex Loser aligned with Harley Race in 1991 in a match against Barry Windham, and Windham as a result turned face. But what Austin will we see. Will we see a good version of Dr. What?-Just what we need: a good guy psycho. Didn't we get enough of that with Rick Steiner and Evad Sullivan? And don't think I've forgotten about Vince; he's starting to show that heel turn too. After all, he wasn't going to stay face forever. It was weird seeing Ric Flair on Raw. Remember, the first time around, Ric just didn't quite fit in, and he and Vince parted on good terms. Is that the only time that happened, or what? Ric is going to be in a non wrestling role for the most part, and that suits me fine. I find it quite intriguing that he is aligned with What? 3:16. The ugly word has also entered the equation: UNIFICATION. I really have no major problem with it, but one. You see, you can't have 837 titles (or so it seems) floating around. But when the U.S. and Intercontinental titles were unified, it basically spelled the death of the U.S. title. The WWF isn't going to keep a WCW title, whether they own it or not. I have to say that to get rid of the U.S. title sucks. The U.S. title has way more history than the IC belt, and it would be nice to see some vestage of the NWA/WCW retained. And after Vengeance, when there's only one world champion, please tell me you're keeping the WCW world title belt, which makes the WWF title belt look like Mork from Ork's suspenders. Survivor was okay, and WWF TV programming has been getting better. When some of the injured stars like HHH and Benoit can make it back, it will be easier to draw up storylines.
