It's been a long time coming that Toronto got ANYTHING from the WWF. Our last big event was February's Raw at the Dome in '99 and I couldn't even tell you what happened at that show even though I went to it. Finally, we'lll be getting Raw, SmackDown! and Wrestle-Fucking-Mania! Toronto constantly breaks record for the WWF and get no love. For a while, we had Raw's highest attendance, highest House Show attendance for the WWF. One of the biggest attendances ECW ever got. At WCW Mayhem, we turned Sid face and got Bret the world strap. We also the smartest bunch of fans around. We've finally got love from the Fed. Thank you. LOVE THE NEWSLETTER? PLEASE TELL A FRIEND TO JOIN! Thanks for reading. naidO// ====================================================================== TOP HEADLINE//======================================================== Dave Scherer reports the following on the latest between the WWF & DirecTV: After speaking with a few people very close to the WWF-DirecTV situation, here's an update on that story. As mentioned before, the dispute centers around a financial item in the now expired contract that the sides had. In the contract, it clearly stated that either side could take a dispute to arbitration, and DirecTV did so. What people won't say on the record is that the WWF, being in a position of power, has negotiated a new contract that is much more favorable to them financially that the old one was. Being the only wrestling promotion in town and the steadiest draw on PPV allowed them to do so. Numerous people have told me that a new deal has been agreed to, but has not been signed due to the current dispute. People close to the situation have told me that a resolution is expected to happen. Right now, there is a lot of posturing going on, but with both sides expected to lose in excess of a million dollars for each event that does not air, all signs point to the 9/23 Unforgiven airing on DTV next month. What will probably happen is that we will be told that the sides came to an amicable settlement in their dispute, with terms not being announced. Everyone saves face, and everyone makes money. Happy B-Day big V! -Smackdown scored a 5.0 overnight broadcast rating with an 8 share, according to Nielsen Media Research. That is slightly down from the 5.1s that the show has done the last few weeks. The 5.0 led UPN to a fourth place finish last night, beating Fox (3.6) and WB (2.8). -From WWF.com: Toronto --Sept. 3 -- Several World Wrestling Federation Superstars will be part of a rally at Nathan Phillips Square -- located adjacent to City Hall in downtown Toronto -- which begins at noon. The rally is free and open to the public. Superstars scheduled to be there include THE ROCK, UNDERTAKER, KANE, CHRIS JERICHO, CHRIS BENOIT, EDGE, TRISH STRATUS, HARDY BOYZ, LITA, KURT ANGLE, VINCE McMAHON and JIM ROSS. The superstars are in Toronto for RAW IS WAR (Sept. 3) and SmackDown! (Sept. 4) at the Air Canada Centre, and and this is their way of thanking Toronto fans for their support. With all of the speculation about the World Wrestling Federation teaming up with Toronto for a big event, one has to wonder what this rally is really all about. -Yesterday, WWFE CEO Linda McMahon held a press conference in conjunction with the Q1 2001 financial figures that were also released yesterday. Here are the major news and notes to come out of the conference: *She said that the DirecTV split will hurt WWFE's plans for growth, however they will continue to expand down other paths. She said that they are continuing on working on a new deal. *She noted that since the Alliance angle has come onto WWF TV, there has been a 17% increase in RAW is WAR's ratings, with a 13% increase in viewership for Smackdown. *She hinted at an opening of a WWF head office in London, which is in conjunction with their aim of pushing more overseas markets within the next few years. *She said that the ratings of Tough Enough has well exceeded their original projections. *She said that Excess will be broadcast live from the studio in Stamford, CT and will include backstage footage, on the road features and fan interactivity through phone and emails. *She said that the timetable for splitting up WCW/ECW and the WWF into two separate promotions is early 2002. -WWF.com has posted an article on the cancellation of the long-time running WWF Superstars program. An MRI conducted Wednesday revealed the tear. Dr. William Armstrong performed the procedure that expects to keep DDP out of the ring for approximately one month. -1Wrestling is reporting that Scott Steiner's injured foot is continuing to improve, and once his AOL-Time Warner contract expires in December, it only seems a matter of time until he is signed by WWFE. -A reminder that Lance Storm is today's guest on Byte This at the WWF website at 4PM Eastern. To read the article, click http://dailynews.philly.com/content/daily_news/2001/08/23/features/MAD D23F.htm -The telltale signs of a fledgling company starting to buckle under pressure are already apparent. MECW owner John Collins has told 1wrestling that he's "discovered I'm not any good at this. In fact, as far as running a wrestling company I pretty much suck. I'm going to turn the company over to people like Tod Gordon and let them run it." Apparently this stems from accusations that several MECW wrestlers have either not been paid in recent weeks, or have been paid with bounced checks. Another incident occurred when several MECW wrestlers airline tickets had not been paid for when they were about to travel to Evansville, IN on Wednesday night for a CCW show. A source at the CCW show overhead a conversation with John Collins where Collins stated that he had proof that the cancellations were done by Paul Heyman from WWF Titan Towers. More updates will follow. -WrestlingObserver.com has interviewed the one and only Kevin Sullivan, to read part one of the Q&A, click http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/news/interviews/default.asp?aID=3218 Source// 1Wrestling ====================================================================== Article//============================================================= Toronto has hammerlock on 'Mania By GEORGE CHRISTOPOULOS -- City Hall Bureau Toronto has a firm grip on WrestleMania XVIII -- the World Wrestling Federation's ultimate show, sources say. Billed as one of the biggest single sports-entertainment events, the ultimate showdown will likely be held at the SkyDome. It would mark the second time the WWF has chosen Toronto for its annual no-holds barred mania-fest. Sources said Mayor Mel Lastman, Premier Mike Harris, WWF officials and several stars will make the official announcement at Nathan Phillips Square over the Labour Day weekend. The sources said the SkyDome will increase its seating capacity to 70,000, based primarily on a floor reconfiguration and the inclusion of the SkyDome Hotel and three restaurants. Canada's largest city has long been considered the front-runner in the battle royal with two U.S. cities for the right to host the mat classic in March 2002. WrestleMania has become a huge phenomenon since its debut in 1985 with Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Andre the Giant, Big John Studd, Rowdy Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. Today's stars include The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, the Undertaker, Kane and The Hardy Boyz. When last held in Toronto, in 1990, Wrestlemania VI set Canadian attendance records by attracting 67,678 fans. And an audience of more than 50 million people in 40 countries tuned in to watch the Ultimate Warrior defeat Hulk Hogan for the WWF championship. The WWF earned more than $40 million from the 31/2-hour event. The largest mania crowd gathered at WMIII at the Pontiac Silverdome in suburban Detroit, where 93,173 witnessed the bedlam. ====================================================================== Comment//============================================================= Vile Thoughts - by The Vile Summerslam has come and gone, and while many of the outcomes were predictable, we still saw some things that need to be discussed. Here are just a few... Shawn Stasiak is, well, how can I put this? A BOOB!! And I don't mean one like Steph has. Call this his punishment for his taping conversations in the locker room. Can we just say right now that RVD is the wrestler of the year? He and Jeff Hardy have been to hell and back three times now; each new trip more vicious than the last. I had actually hoped that Booker T might be coming back after what happened on Raw. It was nice to see the Q man get humiliated at Summerslam, and then again on Raw. We saw a more serious Booker after the dismantling of Tajiri, but no. He waqs back to the spinaroonie, or spinadoodie, or sit and spin, or whatever the hell they call that thing on Smackdown. One thing is for sure: He will not beat the Rock; at least not in the forseeable future. I also thought there was hope for Loser 3:16 in the WWF title match on Sunday. It was actually a damn good match, right up until the part where he got killed. (You never ever leave your wingman) Whoops, wrong show. Anyway, we saw Austin clock three refs, and then get DQ'd by referee extrordinaire Nick Patrick. Right. And what about the abuse of the refs on the previous Raw that went unpunished? If you guys want us to believe that DQs still exist, then you have to be consistent. You just can't use them whenever you feel like it. If you want Austin to win, fine. Have him win. Why is it that all rulebreakers must win big matches by cheating?-See Smackdown. This is the same Austin that pinned everyone and their grandmother when he was a face. Now he's a heel, and can pin no one cleanly. What the hell is up with that? As for the atrocity on Raw that was "Loser 3:16 Appreciation Night", I was into my third barf bag when they started singing. That is when I sincerely contemplated suicide. Then the Olympic Hero/Zero saved us all. Yeah, it was an old gig with the hose (Austin '99), but when he brough out the red, white, and blue cooler with the milk cartons, I really didn't think he'd do it. But he did; slapping them together, and slamming them Austin style was hilarious. Hilarious is one of the tamer words to discuss the treatment of the Dirtbag of Doofus this week. First they have him bitch-slapped at the hands of the Biker and Kane on Sunday. Then he's the victim of outside interference (gasp!!) that allows Sara to pin him on Monday. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving creep. And lastly, WWF Excess starts this Saturday. Excess? Why not Access? Wouldn't that have made more sense? Anyway, it promises to be interactive, and we'll have to see about that. I hope they treat the fans with some intelligence, and not expect us to play along with the storylines. On the plus side, Trish Stratus will be a host, so it can't be all bad. With HHH the first guest, hopefully one of the fans will ask the question on everyone's mind. Not how he will deal with Loser 3:16. Not how is his rehab coming. The real question is: How does he like Steph's new boobies? What? (If I ever do that again, kill me immediately) ====================================================================== Remember...=========================================================== -Remember that if you've missed any TV Shows, PPV's or more?
