Tell people the results, why watch? - naidO nWN Founder - http://www.geocities.com/naidosnews ______________________________________________________________________ [TOP NEWS STORY] The Associated Press is reporting today that the Federal government is about to ease up on a regulation that, until now, had prohibited one company from owning two broadcast television networks. The Federal Communications Commission (The FCC) is scheduled to review a plan today that would allow one of the four big networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX) to also own one of the "weblet" networks (like a UPN or WB). The AP reports that the FCC is "widely expected to approve the proposal." This is a change that would allow CBS and the fledgling UPN network to remain in the same family. Viacom owns both the CBS and UPN networks. The FCC had ordered Viacom by May to shed UPN, but a rule change should enable the company to keep the network. This rule change would allow Viacom, which broadcasts the WWF's Smackdown on UPN, to continue to own and operate the network and thus, air the show. When it proposed easing the rule last year, the commission concluded that allowing broadcast companies to own multiple networks would place it on a more level playing field with cable operators, TV satellite companies and other distributors. Advocacy groups say the agency has no research to back up that such an action serves the public interest. "This is a blow against diversity and competition that will have a very negative impact on the democratic process," said Jeff Chester of the Center for Media Education. (AP) ______________________________________________________________________ [News from The WWF] **On the next Smackdown! broadcast: - Rhyno against Kane (Hardcore Title Match). - Eddie Guerrero versus Grandmaster Sexay. - Rhyno spears Hardcore Holly during a promo. - Undertaker and Kane trash William Regal's office. - Kaientai versus APA versus Right To Censor. - Rhyno faces Hardcore Holly. - The Big Show decides if he is going to WCW or not. - Dudley Boys against Jericho, Benoit. - Chyna against Molly Holly. - Kurt Angle puts on a submission hold clinic. - Edge, Christian face Kane, The Undertaker. (WWF Tag Titles Match) **As of now, the estimated number of buys for WrestleMania X-Seven is around one million total buys, which would translate to around a 2.4% buy rate, which is huge. In fact, if the number holds up, it will be the highest buy rate of any pro wrestling PPV inside the United States since SummerSlam 1991. It also beats last year's WrestleMania, which did around 824,000 buys. **Currently the WWF creative team has no ideas planned for Trish Stratus. This is the reason why the WWF had Trish appear on WWF New York. It was just an excuse to have Trish on television, because WWF officials believe that Trish brings ratings. **Apparently, the WWF and David Flair have reached to an agreement that David would be signing a developmental deal and be sent to OVW or MCW to improve on his skills. However, a written contract hasn't been sign yet. **SLAM! reports that Stone Cold Steve Austin and HHH may end up with the WWF Tag Team Titles as well, so between them the pair will be holding 3 titles. **SLAM! Wrestling has an article with Jim Ross addressing concerns over what Big Show said during RAW. Many fans allege Show called Kaientai "gooks," a slanderous remark, during a backstage segment. However, Ross says Show said "goofs," but didn't enunciate clearly enough because he was trying to talk "hip" at the time. "The bottom line is it was not written for him and he did not enunciate very clearly. He was talking kind of fast and somewhat out of character, trying to be hip or cool, and it came out sounding like it was 'gooks', as in the slanderous remark," Ross told SLAM! Wrestling as he took time out from WCW meetings in Atlanta, Georgia, to address the issue. Ross also stated that Paul Heyman pointed out there could be confusion over what Show said and a decision was made to further emphasize the word "fools" by the announce team. They are free to negotiate with the WWF or any other wrestling promotion they wish. Vampiro has an outstanding issue with WCW about merchandise, including problems with trademarks in the WCW merchandise now owned by the WWF. **Lance Storm has updated his online commentary. To read it, click http://www.stormwrestling.com/commentary/default.asp?aID=1064 **Jim Ross is currently in Atlanta conducting some WCW-oriented meetings, to sort out the future of the company: - At this stage the only big name from the old WCW who is basically a lock to be in the new WCW, is Booker T. - Many are wondering if the show will draw a large enough amount of revenue to maintain contracts of the likes of Flair, Goldberg and DDP, if they are signed. - Also, lots of former ECW talent like Tommy Dreamer, Nova, Chris Chetti and Little Guido are being considered for the new WCW. - It is expected that Johnny Ace will be kept in some form for the new WCW, but whether it will be as a booker or as a road agent has not yet been determined. **AOL has raised the buyout prices of the contracts for the WCW wrestlers. Someone who received over $1 million a year was to receive 30 cents on the dollar, but now it has been raised to 50 cents on the dollar, increasing the chance of a buyout so they can work in the new WCW. **Bill Goldberg, DDP and Ric Flair are all very interested in returning to the new WCW, moreso than ever. Aparently Goldberg has gone even as far as calling the WWF, but obviously nothing will happen unless they all accept Time Warner's buyouts from their existing contracts. STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - Los Angeles Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox was picked as the XFL's inaugural Player of the Year on Wednesday. The former UCLA star, who had three stints in the NFL, led the XFL with 2,186 passing yards and 18 touchdown passes. The Xtreme won the Western Division championship and play the San Francisco Demons Saturday for the league title in the Million Dollar Game. Maddox was the only XFL quarterback to start all 10 regular season games and threw at least one TD pass in eight of them. He earned weekly player honors in Week 7 when he threw for two scores and rushed for another in the Xtreme's 31-6 win over previously unbeaten Orlando. He played in the NFL with the New York Giants and Atlanta.
