The overnight rating is a new low for the XFL, and further throws doubt on the future survival of the new league. The XFL had shown slight improvement last week with a 2.8 overnight rating compared to a 2.7 the week prior, but the current rating is less than half of the rating promised to advertisers. To put last night's record low XFL ratings into proper perspective, a disproportionately large portion of the XFL audience is more likely to go out drinking on St. Patrick's Day, plus those who did watch sports on TV had the NCAA tournament as another option. Those factors may mitigate to a certain degree the impact of the record, although next week's ratings must rebound for the above excuses to prove to have some validity. Promoter Randy Hales was put in a tough situation. There was pressure from WMC-TV in Memphis to put Lawler back on the air, since he is still a big ratings draw in the market. When Lawler wanted to return, Hales contacted Jim Ross, who gave approval to the deal on Thursday. However, at 3 p.m. on Friday, the WWF reversed its position. Hales, who had his television already written, had already advertised Lawler, and was forced to make a choice. He chose using Lawler and on the show they talked about that Lawler would be a regular on the show every Saturday. **The Rock was on the FoxNews Channel today, very briefly promoting "The Mummy Returns." Clips of his WWF career (mainly pretty old stuff of him as a heel) were interspersed with an interview. The interview was pretty uninformative, but he did say the only thing he's afraid of are big South Florida cockroaches. **Today's Phil Mushnick New York Post column says regarding the Vince McMahon-Bob Costas interview: McMahon, in the role of Vince McMahon, angrily, and nearly violently, kept accusing Costas of interrupting him. Yet, Costas clearly was trying to interrupt McMahon's usual filibustering, to keep him, as Costas tried to explain, "on point." http://www.nypostonline.com (Cred: wwf.com, the law, dave meltzer, wade keller) _______________ [News from WCW] **AOL/Time Warner has publicly confirmed what we already know, and that is the "temporary hiatus" of WCW programming on the network is permanent. Jamie Kellner, the new head of all Time Warner programming decided that wrestling was inconsistent with the image he is trying to build of both TNT and TBS. Eric Bischoff and Fusient have a meeting Monday with FOX. f you understand the nature of corporate television and the reality of the current economic situation, the idea they will immediately pull the trigger is a longshot and in life, timing is everything and if they can't pull the trigger right away, the end result is the worst thing possible for the industry. It is possible, and it is a viable product for them, maybe now more than ever because it can help build a smaller cable station with programming that if done correctly can draw decent numbers. News Corp. is tied into many international TV deals and American wrestling programming plays well overseas (Cred: The Law) _______________ [News from ECW] **Don't forget all those pervert pics! An old friend that served us well, nay, an old friend that entertained us, gave us a reason to smile, an old friend that once gave us countless hours of enjoyment on Saturday night; One who brought smiles to our faces on Monday night, and well, was there on Wednesday night ... I think. In his youth, he gave us matches and words by the incomparable Slick Ric, taking jobber after jobber to school and he have us the most renowned Professor of English Diction of the 20th Century, Sir Fatso of Rhodes. He provided for us in many ways, giving us the big men like King Harley de Race, Lord Vader and the biggest of them all The Giant Andre; he also gave us the small men and the women to cheer for. As he grew up, he gave us the greatest stable man has ever known, The nWo. This brought us Big Lazy and his partner, Scott "Just 'Don't Say No" Hall, and also Old Baldy. With this weapon, he ruled the world, bringing the mighty Emperor McMahon and The Evil Empire of the North to it's knees. Nothing could stand in his way now; he was unbeatable, ruling the airways for 82 weeks. He found $oldberg and enlisted The Emperor's trusted Knight The Canadian Crybaby into his fold. The world was his and he would rule for 1,000 years. Then the day of reckoning came, he no longer gave the people what they wanted. They took to the streets and shouted "down with stale ideas", "away with lame wrestlers" and after long overstaying its welcome, "burn the nWo." What was going on? The Emperor had enlisted a new army. He had found Stone Cold Steve of The Clan of the Middle Finger, The Rock of Catch Phrases, The McMahon's of Sunnybrook Farm, and countless others that thrilled the fans, filled the arena, hit the ratings meter and rang the cash register. He fought back valiantly, even convincing The Emperor's Chief Storyteller, Vince The Smutmonger, to join his Court. Alas, nothing worked. His Kingdom fell deeper and deeper into despair. His fans deserted him in droves. He played to empty seats. As his fans switched to another TV station, his new Masters called for drastic action: They demanded he sell his soul to the highest bidder. Emperor Vince was said to be interested in picking his bones, but decided against it. Along came an old friend Good Old Eric, backed by a someone new, White Knight Fusient. All seems in place. He was on his way. Alas, it was not to be. The Banker of the White Knight decided to put his gold elsewhere. A new Supreme Ruler of the Airways of Many Kingdoms took the throne and decreed that forevermore none of his stations shall show the sport of wrestling. The Supreme Ruler must know what he speaks of, after all he was Ruler of The WB and all know how he made that Number One. He hath dealt the fatal blow. WCW laid mortally wounded. It will be but one more NITRO, one more Blunder and a last PPV, Greed. It would seem prudent to tape these as remembrance of what was. You can keep forever in your hearts a final Main Event with none other than the greatest of them all, Douchebag Doophus Page. What more fitting way for WCW to be buried than with Douchebag in the last matches? Poetic Justice or a sad quirk of fate. One never knows. WCW may be one of the Children of the Night and rise again. The dead reborn. There are whispers on the wind that The G-d of The Airways' child, FOX, may have interest in a new Federation to battle The Evil Empire. Have faith. As a great (just ask him) philosopher once said about his Empire,"Anything can happen in The WWF," so maybe it can happen elsewhere.
