Apparently the main reason is because of the sale price has dropped, meaning the WWF could afford to acquire WCW if they wanted. Also, Vince commented on the firing of Stacy Carter. Costas asked Vince about falling XFL ratings, WWF entertainment, the Lionel Tate case, and more. Of course, Vince was Vince and Costas was unprepared. Vince McMahon's appearance on "On the Record with Bob Costas" was the typical interview you would expect McMahon to give and get. The first topic was sinking XFL ratings. McMahon stood by what he's said to the press recently, saying he is trying to build a brand and it takes longer than a few weeks or even a year. He praised NBC for sticking with the league and promised that the XFL would last for another season. Vince said the quality of football is what will draw viewers back to the program. He said since XFL didn't have a preseason, the quality of play wasn't up to par in the first few weeks. McMahon stated that the current quality of play was fantastic and several rule modifications added to it. Vince got edgy when Costas suggested NBC would be left with a "stigma" for doing business with him. The questions moved on more toward wrestling, with McMahon again on the defensive. Costas made the general observations and showed a clip of Vince "denigrating" Trish Stratus from 3/5 RAW. Vince used the standard defense of "its just entertainment." When asked if the WWF contributed to a violent society, Vince stated that his brand of entertainment contributes no more than the Sopranos or Sex in the City, two HBO shows. At one point, Vince got in Costas' face because he kept being interrupted. The Florida trial of Lionel Tate was brought up. Costas was so unprepared that he didn't even know the boy had been convicted and sentenced. Vince called the boy a murderer and said wrestling had nothing to do with the little girl getting beaten to death. The last topic of discussion was Owen Hart. Vince said more considerations had been taken into account to ensure safety of WWF wrestlers. Overall, Vince came off well on some points but overbearing on others. Costas was totally unprepared for the interview and interrupted way too much, hardly giving McMahon a chance to answer some questions. (Thanks to LWN) ______________________________________________________________________ [Column] Vile Thoughts - by The Vile It has been, shall we say, an interesting week. First off, ECW finally made an announcement on Saturday that the Living Dangerously pay per view scheduled for March 11th was canceled. GASP!!! we had no idea. Just because no matches were ever announced, or a venue to hold them in, we never expected that. And now we wait with baited breath for Paul E's announcement regarding the state of ECW. Let me help you: These days, ECW looks like the little town that was invaded in Red Dawn. As for WCW, I couldn't believe my eyes. Did I actually see women on the show? And I don't mean the kind that have a suggested inflation rate. I mean real, breathing women. Did they finally realize that while women don't have to be the centerpiece of the promotion, they do add a special flavor to the "soap opera" aspects of wrestling. I do find it funny that they blasted Vince's baby angle out of the water. It seems that they want to eradicate any glimmer of the Russo era that might appear. Makes sense to me as it was in the running for worst angle of the year. And does anyone care that Greed is on Sunday? I mean, I don't think I've ever seen less excitement over a world title match. And not just because the Dirtbag of Doofus is in it. Maybe it's because the real-life drama regarding WCW's future makes for better reading. First they're sold, then they're not. Then they're gonna shut down. Then they decide to stay open. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what haapens. The last scheduled Nitro is on the 26th, so after that, all bets are off. I find it hard to believe that WCW would just shut down lock, stock, and barrel. If that were to happen, and I don't believe it will, there will be two serious consequences: (1) Vince McMahon will have won the nuclear war, and will be the last cockroach standing. (2) Wrestling as we know it will degenerate because Vince will have no one to keep him in check. No one to challenge him; to make him strive for excellence. As for Emperor Vince's kingdom, I have a few observations.... Is it just me, or has it been a while since Raw sniffed a 5.0 or better? Rumors of Linda in the ring at WMX17. Let me just put it this way: There are some things that don't go together- ketchup and peanut butter, Eric Lindros and Bobby Clarke, Al Gore and class, and Linda and "wrestling in the ring". Great to see Shane-O back in the fold. I still say that was one of the worst falls I've ever seen back at Summerslam. I am now taking bets on when he will make up with the old man. Rumors of a TLC rematch at WMX17: Why? Are you guys trying to make your own "Backyard Wrestling" tape? Also, while I have great respect for all 6 competitors, it would be nice to see somebody else go at it for the tag titles. And for Triple H: Thank you for participating in the WWF. You beat Stone Cold in 2 falls in what many people say was the match of the year. Your lovely parting prize: An undercard match at the biggest show of the year, and a home version of Wrestlemania. And lastly, to the scumbag that wrote that horrible script for the halftime show at last week's Rage/Outlaws game. You're lucky I don't find you and shoot you myself. Listening to Adamle and Ventura for 10 minutes would have been better than the atrocity we saw. On the bright side, the game was great, and ratings were up. If only I could say the same about the stock market (sigh). ______________________________________________________________________ [Parting Chair Shot] Remember, tell your friends about nWN - naidO's Wrestling News today! **Missed any TV Shows?
