Here are the highlights: - He said the relationship between WCW and WWF is the same as there is between Coke and Pepsi. - Bedol said WCW needed to improve marketing and production values of the product. - He said Time Warner would still be supplying ad sales. - The new WCW will not try to copy the WWF. - He said WCW needed some fresh writers for more appealing storylines. He put over Goldberg and Scott Steiner as some "talent that can beat up the other (WWF) guys." - He said it was important to try and keep WCW free of steroids, but there is only so much you can do to control the use. - He said wrestling had become part of popular culture. It is no longer an interest to a certain group of people. ______________________________________________________________________ [News from The WWF] **This coming Monday's edition of RAW will be episode number 400. A DirecTV preview has been released, and it doesn't tell us very much about what to expect: Hour 1: Who won the Royal Rumble? Hour 2: Who is the WWF champ? **Here are some notes from the Ross Report on WWF.com. - Steve Austin suffered a knee sprain in the match that aired last night and was in a lot of pain. He was treated yesterday in San Antonio but the MRI showed no significant damage to the left knee. He is going to wrestle on Sunday. - Rock has been having problems with one of his eyes but an examination showed no serious damage to the retina and they're hopeful he'll be fine in a few days. - He expects HHH with his time off to be close to 100% for Sunday's show with his back injuries. - William Regal will also be working Sunday. He was given an epidural shot (this scary shot they give to pregnant women) yesterday and his back is feeling a lot better. - He expects Eddy Guerrero to return around the 29th in Pittsburgh. - Rikishi has a thigh muscle strain but will be wrestling Sunday. They are trying to get him to drop some weight. No kidding. - Dean Malenko should be back in 3-4 weeks. No tears but he did have bone spurs and debris in his knee that was cleaned out. - Al Snow will be in the Royal Rumble even after the minor injuries in a car accident last weekend. - X-Pac won't be in the Royal Rumble but will be back very soon. - First day ticket sales for the 2-25 No Way Out PPV in Las Vegas were 5,300. - There will be matches announced on Heat for the Rumble. - Said Shawn Michaels would be coming back to TV but said he didn't know about wrestling in the future. He will do at least one match, which he estimates at three to four months away (one would think Mania) and then the condition of his back will determine how much, if any, wrestling he'll do. So basically this means the green light on the decision talked about by Vince McMahon was made in the affirmative. - Test will be taping an episode of "18 Wheels of Justice" the week of 1/29. - He expects the announcement of new signings. - He anticipates Scott Vick and Steve Bradley to be brought in shortly. **Smackdown finished with a 4.5 rating and 7 share, leading UPN to a fourth place finish overall, mirroring the placing from the overnight ratings. Scream II on FOX did a 4.2. Other major competition included Millionaire on ABC at 13.4 and Friends on NBC at 11.2. February should be interesting because CBS is putting "Survivor" head- to-head with Friends, which is going to expand to 40 minute episodes the entire month of February, and with sweeps, UPN will put the pressure on WWF to produce hotshot shows. **The WWF has announced the end of year award winners. You can view it by going to: WWFYearInReview.com **The Miami Herald has posted an interesting article on Chyna where she talks about her WWF career and her new book, and to view it you can go to: http://www.miamiherald.com/content/today/sports/wrestling/digdocs/0044 72.htm (Cred: wwf.com, the law) _______________ [News from WCW] **According to the DirecTV preview for Tuesday's special edition of Nitro, Ric Flair will announce Scott Steiner's next opponent who will challenge him for the World title. The opponent named will face Steiner at February's "Superbrawl Revenge." Steiner will not be required to defend his title until the next PPV. In other action: - Chavo Guerrero & A-Wall vs General Rection & Corporal Cajun. - Mike Modest vs Christopher Daniels. Apparently, this will be a match where the winner gets a chance to join WCW. - Johnny the Bull & Big Vito vs Shawn Stasiak & Mark Jindrak. - Lex Luger will face a mystery "major player." - A video "farewell" package will air for Goldberg. Nitro will be taped on 1/22 in Winston-Salem, NC and will be broadcast on 1/23. TNT will be airing "Pretender 2001" in the place of Nitro on Monday. We'll have Nitro taping results available here on the site sometime on Tuesday. **The reason WCW never had the Jung Dragons or Knoble and Karagias on Nitro or Thunder to put over their Sin match, was because that match was an impromptu match at the PPV and at that time Nitro and Thunder was already booked, and they didn't have time for either of them on the shows. **WCW is seriously considering adding a WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Title division. As it is you have Kidman and Rey Mysterio Jr, 3- Count, Jung Dragons and Knoble and Karagias. It is only an idea being thrown up at this stage. **While they are thinking of adding a new division, WCW may soon be abolishing another division, more specifically the hardcore division. The belief is that WCW has pretty much done everything they can do with the hardcore style matches. (Cred: LWN, wcw.com, wcw live) _______________ [News from ECW] **Nothing new at this time. The report ruled Yokozuna (real name Rodney Anoia) died after collapsing with fluid on the lungs. This is considered to be a natural cause of death. It was first suspected by tabloid magazines that Yokozuna suffered a fatal heart attack. According to XFL President Basil DeVito, the XFL has been selling a package of three 30-second ads, which would appear on NBC, TNN and UPN, for about $140,000 each. DeVito said that the XFL won't generate appreciable income from international TV distribution. "We budgeted zero from that", he said. "It's all about exposure. We're trying to get our brand out there." The article stated that the companies that have bought ad time on XFL broadcasts include Anheuser-Busch Companies Inc.'s Budweiser, the U.S. Army, and BP Amoco Plc's Castrol brand. It also stated that the major problem facing the XFL is that nobody is sure what the product will be. Steve Grubbs, who is the vice president of Omnicom Group Inc.'s BBDO advertising agency in New York put it like this. "Nobody really knows what the XFL is going to be. Is the focus going to be on the sideline activities or on the players? Nobody knows. It has no track record." The XFL's 10-week regular season starts on Feb. 3 and the WWF and NBC have said they expect the XFL to generate $80 million in revenue this year and that the league will become profitable in its third year. They also said that they expect an average of about 4.5 percent of the 100.8 million U.S. homes with television to tune into XFL games. ______________________________________________________________________ [Column] Screwjob of the Week Well from what I was told and read Sin seemed to be a really good PPV, sorry I missed it. Animal as the Mystery Man through everyone off, but it did leave me to wonder if, a guy who has never really been known as a singles wrestler can hold his own as a top contender in WCW, we'll have to see I guess. As for the WWF, I give a lot of credit to the APA, for coming to the aid of Austin on RAW, the whole time I expected the match to go down, as I told my friend " Austin comes out gets tripled teamed for a while and out come the Dudley's somehow and all hell breaks lose." So the way it was done with the APA really seemed to screw Angle and Co. over and screw those of us who think we know what to expect from the WWF. Well I should probably move on to this week's winner, and no shock here that it comes out of the Sin PPV... The winner is...Ric Flair What a perfect new beginning for WCW then to put the man who has always been their best heel back where he belongs, as the #1 heel in WCW. In one night he ended Goldberg's career, cost the Insiders the tag titles, and gets credit for the destruction of Sid, that's a pretty awesome way for a heel turn to happen! Until next week...
