Earlier this week at the NITRO/Thunder tapings on Monday, the two men were involved in a backstage brawl that resulted in Page leaving the building along with his partner Kevin Nash. There was no trouble backstage at the Memphis show, and the two men were reportedly civil towards each other. (1wrestling) ______________________________________________________________________ [News from the WWF] **WWF Smackdown scored a 4.5 broadcast rating with a 7.3 share. UPN finished fourth in the network race, behind NBC, ABC, and FOX. **Jim Ross had some interesting newsbytes in his latest Ross Report: - He said that that "Brian James, a.k.a. the Road Dogg, has been suspended indefinitely from the World Wrestling Federation to handle some personal matters much more important than his career. Brian is a talented performer and we wish him only the best during these challenging times." I agree with Ross. Getting his problems straightened out is much more important for Dogg than wrestling. - The Undertaker competed on Smackdown with a stomach virus. - Al Snow's injured wrist is healing. His status is day to day. - Mideon is developing a new character. He has been working dark matches playing a Dusty Rhodes "American Dream" type persona. - Matt Hardy's injury is actually a bruised collarbone, and not a shoulder injury as first reported. - Grandmaster Sexay missed TV this week after his father-in-law was involved in a serious car accident. - Tori has been cleared to return. - Numbers for Chyna's "Playboy" magazine have been released. The issue sold over 1,000,000 copies and exceeded the Sable edition by 200,000 copies. Another note on Chyna: Her book, "Chyna: If They Only Knew" hits the streets on January 29. That means she is going to be getting a huge TV push in mid-January and all through February - Lita has a bulging disc in her back and will miss in-ring action for the next few weeks. - Triple H will be ready to resume work by the Royal Rumble but will likely be held out of action. - Kurt Angle will be inducted to the Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame next June. **Tazz, Raven, Ivory and The Kat will be appearing at the January 13th Memphis Championship Wrestling show in Corinth, Mississippi. **Predictions have Mick Foley fighting Vince McMahon at WrestleMania. (Cred: WWF.com) _______________ [News from WCW] **Bob Ryder reports that Sid Vicious returned to action in a match against Jeff Jarrett. **It now looks like the WCW sale won't be finalized until the beginning of the New Year. Many speculated that Eric Bischoff was going to show up at tonight's Memphis TV tapings and announce the done deal, but he has apparently flown home to Arizona so the deal probably won't be announced as soon as thought. **Early rumors have The Rock vs. Kurt Angle for the WWF Heavyweight Title as the Royal Rumble main event. The CFL won a lawsuit against the XFL over the rights to Keith Smith, who was attempting to get out of his CFL contract to play this season for the XFL. Even though the CFL season ends before the XFL season, the CFL contracts are dated through mid-February, after the XFL starts. **Davey Boy Smith pleaded not guilty today on charges of threatening Bruce Hart on 12/10. (Cred: The Law) ______________________________________________________________________ [Column] Screw Job Of The Week Well this week was definitely fun, I was surprised how good Nitro was, I was really hoping Lance Storm was going to be pushed to main event status but Jarrett Vs Steiner Vs Mystery Person sounds pretty good. Of course WCW ruined it with Thunder, after being so impressed with Nitro I was just as disappointed with Thunder, the big bad Mystery partner looked like a goof at the end of the show and kind of made me worry about the Sin main event. But, oh well because my mind was made up at about 11pm EST on Monday Night, RAW just pulled a great screw job and we know what that was, so without further ado... The winner is...Vince! I will give credit to Steph, Angle, Edge and Christian as well, but Vince was the one who set things up and got to be the one to fire Mick Foley. I get the feeling this won't be the last we see of Foley but it's still a great angle in my book. I don't think any of us expected to see Foley out of the WWF Commish job that quickly, so now we just have to sit back and see what else good old Vince has in store. Ted Cabata tcabata@r... AOL IM: Frogs 11 ______________________________________________________________________ [Column] Rounding The Squared Circle "A LITTLE BIT OF SUGAR HELPS THE MEDICINE GO DOWN" OR "TAKE TWO HOGAN'S AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING" If your first inclination after what you are about to read is that I should be hung, stoned, burned, or worse yet, ... forced to listen to twenty-four straight hours of Fat Tony and Man Mountain Mark singing a duet of "We Are Family," ... not to worry, you're not alone, that was also my first thought. With WCW in about the same shape as a Christmas Goose two hours after dinner at Fat Tony's, something needs to be done, and fast. Whether Time Warner sells it (as it is reported about to do to Good Old Eric and Friends), or keeps it, drastic measures are needed. When the WWF was on life support following the departure of most of their talent to the greener (green as in dollar bills) pastures of Atlanta, they were lucky enough to have two bankable names remaining: Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. While they were rebuilding, these two were there to provide "star power." Michaels, considered by many the greatest man ever at handling the mic, gave the WWF the charisma it needed, while Hart provided ring talent and a natural adversary for Michaels. WCW lacks anyone like Michaels, who could carry them while they rebuild. Let's look at who WCW has in their top echelon: Pumped Up Poppa - A loose cannon. You never know what he might say or do. Booker T - If he could only talk as well as he can break dance. Sting - Maybe 10 years ago. JJ - You can't build around paper mache guitars Goldberg - Destroys opponents, but not much else. Mike Awesome - A tremendous talent, but not ready to lead WCW. Lance Storm - A blue chipper, but needs time to develop. Big Lazy - Enough said. Where does that leave them? I never thought I would say this, but they, choke, gulp, puke, need Hogan. There I said it. I can't get the taste out of my mouth, but I said it. They need Hogan. They need him to give WCW a voice and a name that people can relate to. They also need The Macho Man, to provide Hogan with opposition, just as Hart did with Michaels. Now that I said it, I have to qualify it. They need Hogan, if, and it's a big, big, if he could be kept under control. He would have to relinquish his total and absolute control over his character. Would he do it? That's very questionable. If he agreed to it, would he stick to his word? That's also questionable. Hogan's ego is bigger than Mark's appetite after a two week fast in the Sahara Desert. Bring Hogan back and it will give WCW a degree of credibility while the younger talent develops. We can't expect Hogan to work his butt off like Michaels did, but we can expect him to show leadership, both in locker room and in the ring. Savage would also have to agree that the promotion comes first. WCW's focus would have to be on bringing along people like Poppa, Awesome, Storm, etc. They couldn't allow the conditions that put WCW in the deep elephant poop it's in now to happen again. Without someone who can "put as*ses in the seats" like Hogan (Good Old Eric, circa 1999), WCW has less chance than an ice cube in a microwave oven on high. Good Old Eric has been vilified (and rightfully so in the opinion of many people) for using Hogan and the other senior citizens to the detriment of the younger boys. If he (or whoever) takes WCW over, nothing short of a miracle will help.
