NAHL All-Star Weekend
At the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota
June 1 and 2nd, 2002
After talking with NAHL Commissioner Rob Blake, the league has decided to introduce its first ever Young Stars Game. This game will showcase players in the NAHL under the ripe age of 22. Hopefully this game will attribute more attention to the future stars of tomorrow, because without these youngsters, the future would not be so bright in the NAHL. The game will coincide with the All-Star Game Weekend, giving these young guns a chance to meet some of their favourite players up close and personal. After a nation wide vote by the fans, we have tallied the votes and come up with the rosters for both the east and west conference.
Congrats to all the young kids who will represent their team in this first ever event in the NAHL. It should be a great experience, and a wonderful way to show themselves off infront of a world wide audience, as well as a packed arena! Players were selected with a few things in mind; First off they had to be under the age of 22, next they had to have shown already this year that they can be impact players in the NAHL. You may also notice that no more than 2 players from one organization have made their respective teams, thus do to giving all teams an equal chance at giving their young talent this phenomenal experience. However, a few teams have no representation at this event because of their lack of young talent, let this be an awakening to those teams for the future. When looking at the Eastern roster, you may have noticed that they have a lot of players who are right at the age of 22, having good years, but are still fighting to become an elite player. It is a fine line that many young players will come across, either become a solid 3rd or 4th line player, or utilizing their talent and becoming a future All-Star. Guys like Alexei Ponikarovsky, Andy Hilbert, David Legwand and Mike Ribeiro are among a few names of players with the dilemma.
On the Western Conference team it is a different story, the team is stacked with loads of high draft picks and superb potential. Infact 7 players on the Western Conference team were drafted in the top 5 of their respective Draft years! Guys like Jason Spezza, Stanislav Chistov, Rick Nash and Joni Pitkanen all have the potential to become the next Forsberg, Naslund or Lidstrom.
Another interesting note comes when looking at the teams with the "best young talent." The Sharks, Ducks, Avalanche, Rangers, Flames, and Bruins have all built strong foundations beginning on the Farm, and it has filtered up into their pro teams, making these teams the top 6 in the entire NAHL! This is astonishing, and it shows that developing young talent within our systems is more important than any Free Agent Signing we may have.
Once again, Congrats to all the young kids who will be a part of this new, exciting experience.

The Western team had to make a few changes from the team they originally wanted to name, Edmonton's Simon Gamache lacerated his hand, San Jose's Jonathan Cheechoo took his place. Chicago's Mikhail Yakubov was struck down with a hernia, Mike Cammalleri made the trip from Los Angeles at short notice.
But anyway.. those are the teams.. Lets hit the ice!!
We all know that All-Star and YoungStar games are not defensive shows, and this was underlined by the fact that it was 1-1 after 1:12 seconds. Daniel Sedin opening up scoring for the West, tied up by Justin Williams. Henrik Zetterberg and Rick Nash had a goal apiece before the 9th minute, and it took a futher 8 minutes (16:59) For the next goal - David Legwand, followed by Mike Ribeiro AND Alex Svitov and the East went into the first intermission with a 4-3 Lead, and some fantastic hockey being played.
Second period, A buck and twelve cents, both teams already had a goal each.. yes again. Radim Vrbata after 14 seconds tied things at 4. Jamie Lundmark fired the East back in front. 5-4. Daniel Sedin brought the game level again with his second of the game, but brother Henrik scored just 11 seconds later and the East went in front again. 6-5. Not to be outdone, a minute after his last goal, Daniel Sedin completed his hat-trick. The game is tied at 6... not something Ive heard regularly.. as Simon Gamache's more-than able replacement, Jonathan Cheechoo (He Reminds Me Of A Train..) Made it 7-6 to put the West back in front for the first time in the period. One Minute to go, Radim Vrabata makes it 8-6 and with 3 seconds left in the period, Rick Nash made it 9-6 with a top shelf goal.
Third period, Dan Blackburn left the game having made 27 saves on 36 shots, as did Ilya Bryzgalov, making 28 saves on 34 shots. Pascal LeClaire entered the Eastern net, and Rick Dipietro, in the West. A baptism of fire for Dipietro, Nik Antropov and Henrik Sedin had his second before the two minute mark. Stanislav Chistov didnt let them get any closer, stretching the lead back out by 2. 10-8 West. Jamie Lundmark got his second goal, 10-9, and with just 2 and a half minutes left, it looked like it might just stay that way.. Ron Hainsey buried the puck past LeClaire, 11-9 to the West and it looked like game over. 97 Seconds to play, Sean Bergenheim in the five-hole. 11-10, a glimmer of hope. Henrik Sedin, determined not to be outdone by his brother Daniel, Completed HIS Hat-Trick with 61 seconds to go, assisted by Lundmark and Komisarek, this now left Lundmark, Komisarek, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Jason Spezza all on 4 points.. whos gonna be MVP? And are we going to OT? 20 seconds on the clock, Cammalleri breaks down the ice, gets behind the Eastern net, plays it out to Spezza along the boards, 17 seconds..Drops the pass off to Stanislav Chistov on the One-Timer.. SCORES! SCORES! SCORES!!
The Xcel energy center went crazy, as an epic game was ended.
Your Third Game Star.. From The East.. Henrik Sedin!!
Your Second Game Star.. From The West.. Daniel Sedin!!
And Your Number One Game Star.. Game MVP and based on this game the most promising player in the NAHL today.. From the San Jose Sharks.. Jason Spezza!!
If The All-Star Game is half as good as this one.. It'll be a classic!

Welcome to the Xcel Energy Center in St Paul's Minnesota for the Second Annual NAHL 2004 All-Star Game!! The finest offensive players in the Western Conference will meet the finest offensive players in the Eastern Conference in a showcase of all the talent the North American Hockey League holds within its grasp. The Rosters have been listed and some players will miss out on their second consecutive All-Star game, and some on their first. The Eastern conference, like in the YoungStar game, had no injury replacements, but once again, like the YoungStar game, the West had to replace a few players. The Dallas Stars' Jason Arnott came in to replace second line Jarome Iginla who was sidelined with a wrist injury, he's listed as Day-To-Day. San Jose's Teppo Numminen was struck down a little more seriously, he faces a 2 week lay off with an injured hip. Mark Popovic of the Mighty Ducks replaces him. Apart from those two everyone else came through the skills competitions okay.
St. Louis and Florida were the only teams not represented at the game. Columbus and Edmonton had some players on reserve, but they never saw action. This could be a reflection of the quality of these teams.. But if thats true, how did the Kings and the Islanders - the leagues joint worst teams have a representative? Another note, this one the boss told me to put in - Despite the game being held in Minnesota, The Wild's only representative was the ever-improving Marian Gaborik, and the Calgary Flames had an unprecedented FIVE representatives in the game.
Fourteen players made the team for the second consecutive year.. yep count em.. and two coaches. Jason Allison, Mario Lemiuex, Simon Gagne, Joe Sakic, Wade Redden, Nicklas Lidstrom, Evgeni Nabokov, Mike Modano, Paul Kariya, Marian Gaborik, Jaromir Jagr, Markus Naslund, Patrick Roy, Joe Thornton and coaches Robbie Ftorek and Bob Hartley.
Just before we hit the ice, we see that Boston coach Robbie Ftorek has re-united former Pittsburgh Penguins, Alexei Kovalev, Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux on a line right after the Western starting line of Tanguay-Sakic-Jagr at the opening faceoff. Lets see if Pittsburgh will live to regret some of those past trades.
Enough talk.. its face off time!!

First face-off, won by Sakic, Jagr picks it up, Dumps it in, Tanguay beats Poti to the puck, puts it in the slot, Joe Sakic scores!! Seven seconds in. Marty Brodeur absolutely nowhere. The veteran Mario Lemieux rattling a shot in off the post 90 seconds later.. 2-0. Give it 2 minutes, shot 4 from the East from Alex Mogilny, top shelf! 3-0! Martin Brodeur couldnt stop a beachball right now. Around the ten minute mark, Brendan Morrison released Marian Gaborik and the Minnesota faithful were on their feet, Gaborik flying past the blueline, Dekes it, shoots.. Cross bar! And it struck the netting.. a sign of things to come? Four minutes left in the first period, the shots are favouring the East at 7-6.. Brendan Morrison released Marian Gaborik and the Fans were on their feet again.. Gaborik past Lidstrom, shot! Glove Save, Nabokov! He cant shut him out forever.. Three minutes.. Joe Thornton dumps the puck in for a line change, Mike Comrie intercepted the pass, 4-On-1 for the West, Bryan McCabe the only defensemen back as Kariya gets the puck, wrist-shot from Kariya! Heavy Metal!! Flying in from the wing was Markus Naslund who picked up on the loose puck and flicked it up past a despairing Nabokov. 1:17 left on the clock, Brendan Morrison released Marian Gaborik again! The Wild on their feet for the third time!! Past the blue line.. Shot.. Save Again Evgeni Nabokov! But he gave up the rebound, Gaborik stuffs it home before Nabokov even moves!! 3-2 to the East with the West buzzing. Ten seconds to go Eddy Jovanovski dumps the puck in hopefully, Kovalchuk beats the icing call, goes along the boards, centers the pass.. Modano deflects the shot past Nabokov!! 3-3 and thats the first intermission.
Evgeni Nabokov hands over the goaltending duties to Jose Theodore, while the poor Martin Brodeur hands his to Marty Turco.. Jose Theodores shut-out lasted a full 59 seconds, Mike Comrie going stick-side on the young Hab. Turco lasted only 30 seconds longer, Joe Thornton breaking a Western streak of 4 straight goals. He tied the score.. at four. Kovalchuk assisted Modano on his first period goal, so it was only common courtesy that Mikey return the favour with a sublime drop pass in the slot, Kovalchuk ripped it past the glove of Jose Theodore. Lemiuex and Jagr combined with two very simple passes, and the puck ended up with Nick Lidstrom who shot over the shoulder of Turco. 5-5. Mario and Jaromir (Sounds like a bad foreign sitcom) Combined again, but this time it ended with Jagr shooting through traffic. 6-5. Halfway point of the game, Yushkevich, to Modano, Modano plays it out to Poti, who passes the puck up to Gaborik along the boards, he takes the hit and gets the pass off, Kariya picks it up, some excellent puck control from Kariya, he holds it.. holds it.. holds it.. Fakes the shot, Theodore goes down.. Kariya strikes it and Theodore sticks up a skate! The puck pings off the blade and hits the netting.. And thats as good a save.. as you will see all year.
Not that it mattered too much though, Gaborik again takes the hit along the boards, gets the pass off, but no mistake this time from Kariya, Jose Theodore.. Close your five-hole! Game is tied at 6. That deadlock stood for just 45 seconds, Billy Guerin finishing off a fantastic pass from Boston team-mate Joe Thornton. Alexei Kovalev stretched the lead 2 minutes later with his second point and first goal, not finished there, though, the most senior player on the ice - Mario Lemieux AGAIN combined with Jaromir Jagr for the Legend's second goal of the game. The East Led the game 9-6. 90 Seconds to go, the West staged another late comeback, A Vancouver 1-2-3 as Markus Naslund scored with the assists from Jovanovski and Brendan Morrison. 40 Seconds to play, this time a Dallas-orientated attack, Yushkevich feeding Modano who shot low, it hit the skate of Marian Gaborik and Theodore did NOT have a chance. The second and final intermission began with the East leading the game 9-8.
Please welcome Nikolai 'The Bulin Wall' Khabibulin and the legend that is Patrick Roy. Playing in potentially his final All-Star game. But I wanna know what Darryl Sutter is telling his Western side, but they have a thing about consecutive goals either side of a period, this time, 2 at the end of the second and three at the beginning of this one for 5 consecutive goals, Ed Jovanovski, Milan Hejduk and Paul Kariya down on the scoresheet. 11-9 to the West now and Patrick Roy playing like the best goaltender of all time.. Khabibulin.. playing like... well a girl really. 10 Minutes to play and it doesnt look like the East are even gonna try to get back in this one.. Until Alex Tanguay steals a pass across the blue-line, advancing on Roy.. He shoots five hole.. Roy stones him! Patrick Roy stones him! and he holds on for the face-off. Sakic wins it, Samsonov gets it, plays it back to Schneider on the blueline, he watches Sakic's run across the crease.. he shoots the puck to the net, Sakic stops it, then flicks it past Roy. 12 Minutes it took to beat him but they finally did it. Maybe the floodgates would open now.. and that they did, before the minute was out, Brian Leetch scored top shelf to tie things up at 11. Five minutes left on the second annual NAHL All-Star game and we are far from done.. ANOTHER Vancouver 1-2-3, Naslund and Jovanovski with the assists this time for Brendan Morrison to put the West back in front. Three minutes, five seconds left, enter the Philadelphia effect, Nolan cuts inside from the boards, picks up the loose puck, drops it to Allison.. Fakes the shot, drops it to Kovalev.. SCORES! 12-12 and we have 3 minutes to go. Niedermayer clears the puck, Modano gloves it down, passes to Gagne, back to Modano, to Gagne, to Modano, fakes the pass to Gagne, plays it to Gaborik flying in, he controls it and shoots!! Top shelf in the corner!! The Minnesotans are going nuts as Marian Gaborik scores the hat-trick!! 13-12, The West are back in and have the lead.
But theres still 2 minutes to play.. 1:46 left on the clock, Lidstrom clears the puck, Sakic picks it up, drops the puck behind him for Jagr.. Helluva shot!! Jaromir Jagr just shot a 20 footer past Patrick Roy and the game is at 13-13. 1 minute left, Marian Gaborik pickpockets Mathieu Schneider, the script is written.. Gaborik winds up, shoots.. HE HITS THE POST! It was so close to a dream finish for Marian Gaborik. 20 seconds to play, it looks like were going to OT here.. but it looked like we were going to OT in the Youngstar game too.. Jagr now, to Kovalev, Leetch providing a goaltending screen, Kovalev to Lemieux, he stops the puck, turns it and hits the backhander... MARIO LEMIEUX JUST MADE IT 14-13 TO THE EAST! What Drama here at the Xcel Energy center.. Still.. we have 15 seconds to play.. and for the West to score in.. Comrie, Naslund and Kariya checking forward, 10 seconds..Naslund to Kariya..Seven seconds.. One Timer! Stick Save Nikolai Khabibulin!! Scott Niedermayer picks up the rebound, to his NYR team mate Brian Leetch, he looks up, sees Lemieux, 4 seconds.. Lemieux takes the puck at the blueline, leaves Poti for dead and shoots it from the blueline.. TOP SHELF!! TOP SHELF! Mario Lemieux has just won the game for the Eastern Conference All-Stars with TWO seconds to go. The East win it 15-13 in the highest scoring All-Star game EVER. Lets check out the game stars..
Game Star 3 - From the East, representing the Carolina Hurricanes Jaromir Jagr!!
Game Star 2 - From the West, representing the Minnesota Wild.. Marian Gaborik!!
Game Star 1 - Its obvious, From the East, representing the Pittsburgh Penguins, with 4 goals, 2 assists and a +7 rating.. Mario Lemieux!!
Give the man a car, a memo to all you guys looking for the Stanley Cup.. sign this man. Even if its only for a year - Sign him. He'll give your cup chances a huge boost...
Oh yeah and that "Pittsburgh Line"? 15 points between them for the game.
I said if this game is half as good as the YoungStar game it'll be a classic, it was better than the YoungStar game - make your own deductions
