CANDIDATE ASSIGNED ____________________________________________________
In this assignment, you will be working with a partner to discover what specific candidates in important Pennsylvania races think about certain topics. You will be required to do a number of tasks in order to complete this project:
1. Using the internet, magazines, newspapers, et cetera, look up the issues at question and what the candidate you were assigned has said about these topics.
2. Make a listing of these topics and your candidate’s opinions on each.
3. Be prepared to turn in this paper, along with a bibliography of the sources you used and attach any internet or newspaper sources to it.
4. Be prepared to orally present what you found to the class in a debate format.
5. You must attach this sheet to the papers that you turn in to me.
The information that is collected will be shared with not only this class but with Mr. Luksik’s freshman classes. The goal is to inform as many students as we can about these topics so that we can have a mock election of our own on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7th. Mock election sheets will be passed out in the homeroom envelopes to each student in the school.
The races we will be looking at are:
Gubernatorial Race: Edward Rendell (D) v. Lynn Swann (R)
Senatorial Race: Rick Santorum (R) v. Bob Casey, Jr. (D)
House Race: Jack Murtha (D) v. Diana Irey (R)
The issues at question are:
War on Terror Taxes Government Pay Raises
Abortion Gun Control Social Security
Education Welfare Health Care
Alternative Energy Immigration First Amendment Rights
Helpful Hints:
1. Each candidate has their own website, look them up online!
2. There are several websites that deal with specific issues and candidates, find them!
3. Newspapers daily have articles about these candidates and will up to the election.
4. It might be easier to break up the issues and each member look up half.
5. Use study halls, free time and other free time to your advantage – do not wait until the last minute or you will not get this done!
This assignment is worth 50 points and is due by Thursday, November 2nd.
