GETTYSBURG INFORMATIONAL LETTER
Dear Parents and Students,
On April 17th, the entire junior class and any senior who has had Modern American History this year will be traveling to the Gettysburg Battlefield. The best learning tool is to come as close as possible to recreating scenarios. That is the purpose of this trip.
The students will be chaperoned by myself, Mr. Jim Luksik, Ms. Judy Rickard and Mr. Steve Lieb. We will be taking two chartered buses to Gettysburg. We will be making a stretch stop on the way down and stopping for dinner on the way back. Students are to bring a bag lunch with them to eat at the battlefield.
The weather should be breaking by that point (we hope!) so students should dress in layers (Jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.). Also, students should wear comfortable walking shoes because there will be a lot of walking involved.
All activities and sports have been cleared for the day so that everyone can participate. Students have been pre-excused from all practices.
Our itinerary is as follows:
6:30-6:45 Leave Bishop Carroll
break stop about halfway to Gettysburg
10:00 Arrive in Gettysburg
3:00 Leave Gettysburg
dinner Stop somewhere on the way back
7:30-8:00 Arrive back at Bishop Carroll
The total student cost will be $22.00 to cover the bus. Students are also responsible for their own dinner when we stop, any food they bring with them on the bus and any souvenirs they might purchase. There is no cost for touring the battlefield or the visitor center.
This is a required field trip. Any student who for whatever reason does not go is to report to school that day and will spend the entire day working on an alternate assignment.
The money and permission slip are due back to me by Friday, March 30th so that we can pay for the buses and let the Gettysburg visitor center know how many to expect.
If there are any specific circumstances that we need to be aware of, feel free to contact me at the school at 472-7500 Ext. 105.
Many thanks!
Mr. Jonathan Nagy

SOCIAL SURVEY
Objective: Your task is to conduct a social survey about an issue important to you. Many issues, including slavery, were important to many people in the build-up to the Civil War. Oftentimes, solutions could have been met if the citizens were asked their opinions.
You have several tasks to complete:
1. Create a survey question with a yes/no answer or one with multiple choice answers.
Examples:
Do you agree with the war in Iraq? Yes or No?
How many days of school do you think should be required each year?
A. 180 B.150 C.200 D. year round
2. You are to collect AT LEAST 50 responses to your question. The more responses the better. You can ask classmates, teachers, parents, etc. to answer your question. Your survey sheet should have the question at the top with the choices underneath it, at least fifty slots numbered down the side with space for each respondent to sign their name and answer the question.
*** You must get each person’s signature that votes in your survey***
3. Write at least a one-page analysis of your survey, including why you chose to poll the question that you did, your expectations before conducting the survey, comments made by the participants and an evaluation of the results. Also include what kind of people were in your sample – teachers, students, etc. You may include a bar chart or pie graph with your analysis but that is in addition to the one page summary.
4. Typing and neatness count!
WHAT YOU ARE TO TURN IN, STAPLED IN THIS ORDER:
A. A cover page with your name and date of the survey centered. Below your name and dates put your question and the results.
Example:
Jonathan Nagy
Survey conducted from March 8th – March 13th
Do you believe taxes are too high?
Yes – 38
No - 12
B. The page you conducted your survey on – Have the question on the top. Number down the side of the page – have each person respond and then sign their name for validation.
C. Your one-page analysis as defined in #3 above.
D. Attach this sheet to the back of your project.
THIS PROJECT IS DUE NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, MARCH 20th
You may turn it in early for a few bonus points!
The entire project is worth 50 points.
FYI: This is a fairly easy project. This is designed to not only help you understand the concepts behind public opinion but to boost your grade at the end of the marking period.
