Life x3 (by Yasmina Reza)
From the playwright who brought you "Art", another dispassionate look at the French middle classes. Two couples tear themselves to pieces in three slightly differing versions of the same act (the last one is the more optimistic!). The lives of an astrophysicist researching the galaxy's dark haloes, of his lawyer wife and spoilt child (whom we never see) are thrown into disarray when a fellow scientist and his wife turn up for dinner one day earlier than planned. Funny, in a savage sort of way.

Confusions (by Akan Ayckbourn)
Five comic tales, each cleverly interwoven into the next. Worth seeing just for the scene in a restaurant, where the waiter acts as a roving microphone, capturing fragments of dialogue. Various tables come into focus; a couple is discussing adultery only to find out their respective husband/wife are having an affair sitting at a table at the opposite side of the restaurant! Another hilarious scene takes place in a park, where the characters progressively move across benches, starting deep conversations with perfect strangers.

The Contractor (by David Storey)
An unusual play set in Yorkshire in the late 60s, arranged like a musical score. All actors are at the same time reciting lines and building and later dismantling a marquee for a wedding reception live on stage! Directing this play must be a nightmare, as the timing has to be impeccable, each piece brought to the scene in the right sequence and immediately put in the correct place. The effort of it all sometimes obscures the object of the play, which is essentially about a father with poor communication skills coming to terms with his daughters marriage and the passing of time.
