The small town was at about 5000 inhabitants when the last of the Jewish families left it in around 1970. My own family was among those leaving at that time. In the past it had quite a large Jewish community, with some four synagogues, a Mikveh and many other Jewish institutions. Today, the remnants of a crumbling and still beautiful synagogue are a silent memory of the absent Jewish community in the very heart of the town.

In 1797, and in 1889, two treasures were unearthed on the same plot of land. The wonderful 4th century treasure, as well as it's interesting story can be viewed at:
