How it came to be.
By Brian McCoy, 03-* President

This program was initiated in Fall of 2005 by the NAACP Chapter at UAB under its Benevolent Committee. It was givent o me in a vision that books could be given to children in the city of Birmingham.  Miraculously, First Book Approached me about this program and its responsibility was handed down to
Tiffany Benton.  From this came leadership from Mo McKinstry, NAACP Chapter member which serves as chair of the First Book Program at UAB.  We are easger to continue the project and the vision that we all share for empowering Birmingham's youth.

What does this program do?

Corporate sponsors give a certain amount of funds/donations towards the purchase of books to 501c(3) organizations to give the children their "first book" and a series of books that follow.

Grants have been granted to:

Southtown Housing Community
Project Hopewell
Urban Ministry/Urban Kidz

How do i get my grant ?
