| IN HONOR OF THE FOUR WINDS |
| To the gentle wind of the North! Soft as a child's whisper, You blow as white as virgin snow And symbolize innocence. You are the protector Of our children. To the flaming wind of the east! Your gust of illumination Lights the world. You represent the yellow sun Of knowledge and enlightenment. We raise the sacred pipe To honor your wisdom. To the mighty wind of the South! Your powerful breath Blows red with incredible strength. You represent the pipestone-- The blood of Indian people. We look to your powers for courage. You are the keeper of the bear, the eagle, the deer and the wolf. To the wind of the west! As black as the wing of the thunderbird, Home of darkness and night, Blow, west wind, blow! We call on you and the thunder powers To bring rain to Mother Earth. Behold the four winds! You stand for the unity of mankind-- The red race, the white race, The black race and the yellow race. We shall live as brothers and sisters And acknowledge our oneness With Mother Earth. |
